I'm using the DQ6 with CPU fan management activated. The fan doesn't start until a few minutes when I cold boot; the passive Scythe Ninja has to get higher in temp first, before the 12cm Nexus rear fan starts at about 5V. I see no worry at all in this behaviour; the back copper plate is extremely go...

You may try the newest Ultimate Boot CD (version 4.0) to launch Hitachi's F-Tool under a linux boot, and see if your SATA controller is being recognized.

Sure. Furthermore, we're still waiting AnandTech to include some T133 and T166 Samsung drives in their reviews. Anyway, I'll probably try this 1TB drive when it's available; it's going to help me cleaning my old backup server from some 200~250 GB drives, and if it's really that quiet I'll post some ...

I've been monitoring SMART temps a few hours before setting up the 4x HD501LJ RAID-0, as the ICH8R RAID controller won't pass the SMART values (as opposed to some hardware RAID controllers), so I spent the first day monitoring temps while I still could. I got 38~42°C while all drives were mostly id...

I guess best solution would be to buy a 3.5 Samsung HD501LJ, which is said to be the quietest (hopping to see it reviewed on SPCR soon :) ), or 5000AAKS and put it in the box. But I guess I would spent a lot of money while struggling with insecurity of possibly not having silent sistem anymore. One...

Ultimate Boot CD 4.0 is out now, and includes HUtil 2.03. It works fine on Samsungs HD401LJ & HD501LJ -- success could depend on the motherboard's controller, however.Michael Sandstrom wrote:Although I have not created an Ultimate Boot CD in a long time, I don't believe the disk includes Hutil V2.03.

Mayble you'll want to give a try to some another external enclosure. I'm using several Vantec e-Sata 3.5" enclosures; they're beautifully made and work to the perfection. don9999 / But WHY the significant difference....? You were comparing a two-drives RAID-0 array against a single hard drive. A two-drives RAID-0 array basically doubles your transfer rates compared to a single hard drive; that is, unless the RAID hardware/software puts too much stress on your system ...
