Like AuraAllan's recommendation: Look for a case with 2x120mm blowing in the front and 1x120mm in the back sucking out. Make sure the airflow is unobstructed to the motherboard area. If it satisfies these two criteria, you will be able to run the fams slower and reduce noise while still adequately c...

These Nexus things are the only devices that I have had any success with:

They where able to reduce the HDD temperature a few degrees, but are nothing brilliant.

I have one of the Asus fanless 3450's in my P45 system and it is great. Video out, can play older games no problem. The card was okay at 50C, but I added a side fan to help protect my SCSI controller from radiant heat and the GPU now runs at 40C.

Make sure nothing is shorting the back of the motherboard.

Unplug any unecessary connectors and try to boot boot with only the PSU, Mobo, CPU, Memory and Video.

You could also use a USB-to-S/PDIF Converter if your motherboard doesn't have a digital coax out.

If there is no good deal on boxing day, I may wait as aztec suggested.

Dedera, Gainward seems a good choice, but I notice that one of the reviews says it exausts into the case as well due to the open construction. At least it doesn't exaust onto the card below, which is my main concern.

I've been running with positive air pressure for years, mainly to reduce dust in the case. A few years ago, I removed the rear fan as being unecessary, so it is interesting to see that validated.

I have been using SCSI drives for years and they are always the loudest components in my system. You can do a lot with mounting with foam or sorbothane, but there are limits.

One thing you will never be able to get rid of is the chunky access sound.
