IMO, a server case should allow easily changing a single failed HD. That looks tedious in this case.

Good review there, Bill.

Can you compare the R2's sturdiness to the P18x, CM690 II, and/or Mountain Mods Monticle? I like cases that still feel like anvils after 6 years' abuse.

And system resistance isn't easy to measure overall. That's certainly true. Very few sites produce good WC reviews. Back to the OP... Because you're looking for a silent PC, you should focus on the pump(s) & fans. If you have not bought the extra rad & pump yet, WAIT! Check your temperatures in a n...

In my experience, an Acer 1410T (Celeron SU2300) makes an Asus 1101ha (Atom Z520) feel awful. I'm not the most patient person, but the difference is obvious. With a $100ish budget, I'd definitely look at the E3200 (E3300's only $1 more at Newegg right now) or Athlon II 240. You can find decent mothe...

Re: Kinda boring basement PC

I originally tried to use a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 heatsink, but it was too tall for the case. Both that heatsink and the Kabuto 6 are probably overkill for this CPU, but that's my style. They are. I have an Athlon II 245 under the OEM heatsink. I'd planned to use something beefier, but that proved com...

I'd think about an NAS on your budget.

Do you really need all the HDs in the main case? The case probably won't make a big difference when you have 8 drives, especially with 4 Raptors.

A few more details about the setup could help.

Okay, but the 4670 showed varying results between the official review & the SPCR community at large. Considering that we're looking at an overclocked system, I'd still like to hear from Rucker.

I wonder if the 4670 alone is why this system idles 20W higher than the one I posted. Have you disabled some of the power-saving features?

What is the rest of your system spec, though? As noted in my post, there is no case at this point. The ambient is definitely below 20C, though I've not measured it. I'm not sure how the rest of the system could affect the PSU's heating & cooling at a 180W load, but... * Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P * Intel...

Intel Core i7-860
ATI Radeon HD 5870
Seasonic X-750
Western Digital Caviar Black 750GB

Idle: 59-65W !!!
LinX: 165W
LinX + OCCT GPU: 315W

I'm blown away by the low idle power. Intel & ATI have finally figured out how to do this correctly.

Speedfan cannot control SYS_FAN1. I'll need to dig out an extension cable before I can test the PCH_FAN header. There's also an unusual interaction on the CPU_FAN port. Speedfan's Speed01 & Speed03 both control it. I suspect that one is PWM control while other is straight VDC, but I'm not certain of...

I'm building a GA-P55-UD4P system now. So far, I've used only a PWM fan on the CPU header & haven't used the other headers at all. The motherboard's built-in fan controls are useless for SPCRers, but Speedfan works.

I'll try a 3-pin fan on the other headers and report.

On the test bench with ambient room temperature at 23°C, the fan in the Seasonic X-650 started at about 340W load. In a decent case set up intelligently, this PSU still won't ramp up. And its electrical performance is really really good. Valid points, but the CX-400 remains in a tricky spot. Spending a little more definitely can buy a quieter PSU. With the CX cheap only during MIR specials, bargain shoppers wil...
