I meant that the original chipset HSF is a bad joke - it was horribly noisy at 8,800 rpm (Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe). The NB-1 is a lot more heatsink, it's a bit heavier than a Zalman NB47J, and even a lower rpm fan does a fine job. But there are other problems: if I had a longer card than the 6600GT (or ...

Dysanovic, I used a fan controller to lower the rpm of the original chipset fan, not a software solution - although there may be such solutions, but they use to work with older mobos, not brand new ones. In the meantime I replaced the chipset HSF with a a Thermalright NB-1 and lowered the rpm of the...

Well, I thought about this kind of approach too, but didn't have the heart to slice in two the Winchester's stock heatsink (I use the XP-90 but bought the stock 3200). The solution doesn't look bad, although I don't think it's much better than a NB47J in terms of cooling power. But since it's usable...

Well, I just did the 3DMark overclocking tests: 266 'FSB' X9 multiplier, memory DDR444 1T, CPU 2.4 GHz at 1.475V, HT multiplier X3. The thermal probe reports just 1C more than at 200 'FSB' (36C instead of 35C), the same as the Asus probe. Subjectively, with finger-testing on the NB-1, maybe it's mor...

eander315, I knew about the patent on helicoidal pins for 3 years now. It is the first reason for not using the feature in a clone. The second reason is running passive: the helicoidal design is not that good when passive, since the heat transfer transfer through the pins is lesser compared to 'full...

I have the Thermalright NB-1 on my nForce4-SLI and the fan is running at ~4,700 rpm (still loud, I wish I had the low speed version of that fan). A thermal probe on the heatsink says 35C and by putting my finger on it I couldn't sense heat or cold, so it's at body temperature. I will do further fing...

The Delta 40x20 mm fan is about 25db, not 18, but it's still the quietest solution. I have a Thermaright NB-1 and the Delta 45x10 mm fan was a real screamer until I reduced the speed from ~7,000 to ~4,700, but it's still loud for me. I wish I could find a lower speed 45x10 mm fan. :-( The manufactur...

I have the mobo and CPU you plan to get. I have replaced the chipset with a Thermalright NB-1 and running the fan at ~4,700 rpm, from ~7,000, and it's still loud. The Zalman NB47J is silent, but you need to have some airflow over it, especially if you are overclocking. With my CPU I reached 2.4 GHz ...

Well, my prototype chipset cooler got built, and it sucks! :-( The design had a couple of faults, mainly that the fins are too tightly packed to allow decent airflow, but there were some manufacturing glitches too. I asked a friend of mine to take pictures of it and put them on a web site. When he w...

Interesting information, but I was hoping for something else, like Sorbothane grommets instead of the Antec ones. Sorbothane have a bushing / washer combo and a multi axis isolator - hard drive corner pad. I suppose that one should use the 70 durometer stuff, since the HDD vibration is in the 120 Hz...

niels 007, thank you for the answer. Bottom line seems to be that if the duct is properly designed / built, then the airflow loss is not major. I am unsure if 3DMark2005 can be run in a window, my unregistered 2003 can't. Temps drop very quickly after exiting a GPU intensive application. 80C is at the upper acceptable limit - people with Gigabyte 6600GT passive used to report these numbers. As long as you don't get artifacts, it's supposed ...

Thank you again for the answers. The standard 'slot blowers' are 70-80 mm and obviously loud in order to get good airflow. I am interested about that 120 mm blower by Sunon, I'll try to locate it. After looking at some 'slot blower' pictures I noticed that some are using a conventional (axial) fan a...

Thank you for the answers. The 'blowers' above aren't exactly what I want. An enlarged version of the AC Silencer - without the GPU heatsink - would be best. Or a large and quiet (quietable) exhaust blower, like one by Akasa (that one is of course not quiet, and it's smaller than what I have in mind...

Damn, I couldn't find the right term for it! Maybe 'blower' would be better suited, it was used in the review of the Clever Power PSU... The AC Silencer fans are this kind too, they push air sideways through a duct - the GPU heatsink is in this duct - in my concept it would be a much larger fan and ...

Quiet pusher fan (120 mm or more) - is any available?
Hi, For my case concept I need a quiet (or quietable) pusher fan that is 120 mm or more. It would be placed at the top of the case, exhausting warm air through a duct (~19 cm wide and ~3 cm height) that's over the PSU. It would be nice to have the pusher fan ducted (for the intake) to the CPU heatsi...

Keoinn, The MSI Neo4 has a 24-pin connector, I think all nForce4 mobos have it. In principle when using a 20-to-24 pin adapter your voltages may drop a bit, and the same with a 24-to-20 pin adapter. My Neopower480 came with the latter adapter. IMO the Neo4 has the chipset HSF too close to the PCI-E ...
