The Atom on the D945GSEJT is single core...Eh, if I had to guess, it'd probably sit somewhere between the Duron 1ghz and Celeron 2ghz systems in terms of responsiveness. I have a little GSEJT system that I use for watching videos on while I'm playing games of Civ or whatever, and it's generally a li...

Nah, you'll be fine putting a resistor-based adapter between the motherboard and the fan. I've been running 3 fans like that for several months now.

If you're set on needing ECC, I would consider something like a Supermicro, Intel or Tyan server board paired with a 35 watt single core Conroe CPU or something. Wouldn't that consume more power at idle compared to a low-power board and a 240e or some such? Yeah, but you're ignoring the "If you're ...

Had a look, but I just don't think you're gonna find a motherboard that fits all those requirements. The most challenging being MATX + ECC + Undervoltable all at the same time. ECC is used to promote data integrity and stability, while undervolting has the potential to harm that integrity, so I doub...

You might wish to consider the Sonata Elite if you liked the design of the original - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129057 . It comes without a PSU and is fairly priced as good quality cases go. SPCR did a review of it at http://www.silentpcreview.com/Antec_Sonata_Elite if ...

In that case, you'd only want to connect the yellow sense wire to the motherboard. The only voltage droppers you want to connect directly to a 3-pin motherboard connecter are ones that use resistors to drop the voltage rather than shunting the voltage using the 4 pins on a molex plug.

Hey, what you want is a Network Switch, for example : http://www.ebuyer.com/product/35437 or http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-030-EX as relatively affordable examples. You'll also want to pick up a couple of short CAT5 network cables. Plug the cable coming from downstairs into...

Hrm, 65mm is a little wider than most of the old cards. Your best bet may be to remove the failed fan from the little heatsink, and just screw an aftermarket 50mm fan onto the heatsink - it won't be particularly pretty, but it should work perfectly well.

Any chance you could measure the distance between the two mounting pins for the existing HSF? Looks like it uses the same kinda hole spacing as an old GF4 Ti4x00 (assuming it's this Matrox card - http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/graphics_cards/qid_series/qid/ ? ). If the hole spacing works...

Just a quick thought on the Seasonic - are you 100% sure it's the PSU? My PC has serious squealing/whining issues if I leave the power saving features of the CPU enabled, and that issue vanishes when I turn them off. I know it's not an option for everyone, but just putting it out there :).

Gotta love when people don't understand how much current an i5/i7 draws and melt things, huh?

That said, nice looking board - I do wish it had PWM cooling of some sort, for the abovementioned reason - even at stock those things are gonna get pretty warm under load.

You're very correct in thinking that the i7/x58 combo pumps a lot of heat outta the VRMs and NB, especially when overclocked. I was suffering from stability problems with my system - any amount of overclocking was simply unstable. Moving to a top-down cooler solved all my issues - I'm using a Gigaby...

There should be a little springy bit of plastic near the hinge at the top of the Sonata door - you can just depress that, and the door should pop right out.

If the boards are identical, down to firmware number, manufacturing location etc, then yes you can change them - make sure all the values on the labels of the drives are the same ,as well as the numbers on the major chips on the PCB.

Another option, since you're not too concerned about internal storage capacity, would be one of the "desktop netbook" type machines.

One of these, for example:
