Re: Which is faster, dual-core G3240 or quad-core i5-4460T?

Interesting. 500mA is just the USB specification. How it works in the real world depends on a lot of stuff. I'm guessing both ports can deliver 500mA just fine but the drive needs a bit more while spinning up. The +5V and ground for both these ports are the same. There's resistance in the traces and...

Re: Which is faster, dual-core G3240 or quad-core i5-4460T?

It's 500mA per port. And SilverStone make decent stuff. That 300W unit will be more than enough, unless it's ancient with weak +12V rail. Usually it's the other way around when building a low power system; you end up with a overpowered power supply because there simply is no market for very low powe...

Re: Which is faster, dual-core G3240 or quad-core i5-4460T?

5V × 1.5A + 12V × 2.0A = 31.5 W. That is the highest consumption, which is not very likely in real life. Am I right? What it says about power consumption is indirectly. The power requirements are stated. So we can conclude that the device should not draw more than that. But it says nothing about th...

Re: Which is faster, dual-core G3240 or quad-core i5-4460T?

http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/rkwAAOSwPsBa~CIS/s-l1600.jpg It says "5 V/12 V = 1.5 A/2.0 A". Should the highest consumption be 12V × 2.0A=24 W? No, the power requirements are 5V 1.5A and 12V 2.0A. That's worst case, with a good margin to be sure, and the drive will not ever draw that much in real l...

Yes, that's a reasonable figure. A bit high perhaps, the motherboard is not 40W I think, the DVD perhaps not 27W. What's worrying me is the fans. ;) 80mm and 60mm fans will often make noise while moving meaningful amounts of air. What case will you be using?

Re: Which is faster, dual-core G3240 or quad-core i5-4460T?

I am just wondering about the following and may not take any action. My SilverStone 300W PSU works fine with a dual-core CPU. Does 300W suffice for a quad-core CPU if I want my PC faster? As Abula said, there should be no problems. Try to get hold of a power meter, a cheap Kill-a-Watt type should g...

What is it you are trying to do? :) Do you want something less power hungry than the G3240? If it gets too hot, or if you want to lower the power consumption (at load) you could try underclocking it. https://outervision.com/b/aKHCZP (With Core i5-4460T, the total is 219 W.) https://outervision.com/b...

Re: Which is faster, dual-core G3240 or quad-core i5-4460T?

Faster at multi threaded tasks, perhaps a bit slower at single thread stuff. Power consumption would be about the same I think. Cheap dual core vs. T-branded chip usually shows the disparity between stated TDP and power consumption in real life.

Re: Building fanless, but don't understand PSU issues.

Hello and welcome to SPCR. :) The picoPSU is not a full PSU in itself really. The brick (ac/dc-adapter) together with the picoPSU is what replaces the "normal" ATX PSU in a computer. That and the connection between the brick and the picoPSU. The brick is the main part, it needs to be powerful enough...

Re: Long Lasting Thermal Paste?

I get your point. But thermal paste is used all over the place, almost everywhere electrical components gets hot and require cooling. Saying that most manufactures of thermal paste say to change the paste every 2 or 3 years is not correct. Some niche manufactures does it, as you point out. There's a...

Re: Intel® Core™ i5-8600 65w vs. 95 w

The faster CPU will get hotter at full load, but if the load is momentary and not sustained the heat will even out. The faster CPU will to the task quicker, a hotter but smaller burst. The slower CPU will do the same task over a slightly longer time, a less hot but longer burst. Total power will be ...

Re: liquid cooling vs. air cooling

Quiet at idle and light load, what most of us want - go with air. Quiet at full load all the time, like you are folding 24/7 - consider water. Water cooling adds complexity. Don't think of it as a way to get rid of a fan. And for most people asking about water cooling, it's like if you have to ask, ...

Apples and oranges I'd say. What you need only you can discover. Myself I want a server running 24/7, not just a simple NAS. But I'd say that's a big difference between the two; a disk is just a disk, a NAS is a computer of some sort and can do tasks.

Re: HDPlex cases, adding vent holes to the bottom plane

Interesting idea, but I wouldn't bother. Normally the inside of the case would have roughly the same temperature as the case itself. The case is quite massive so during normal load the temperature is fine. Small bursts of heavy CPU load will not heat up the case much. It can get quite hot during sus...

I don't have the space to properly enclose and suspend five or six HDDs. I put them in a small box and then I put that box away. Gigabit ethernet is plenty fast for my storage needs. The market for HDD silencers in 2018 is very small. It was never very large to begin with and the SSD pretty much kil...
