Re: Steiger Dynamics HTPC Case - $749 - would you buy it?

Maybe it's just the good feeling that things you have spend big money on do look like they cost a fortune?

'cause if you have a living room with designer furniture and stuff that cost more than my and your car together, you do not want to have the cheapo PC look?

YMMV

Re: Advice on building quiet PC

+1 for too many fans

You'll probably get away with:

1 fan on Kotetsu, set to PWM by BIOS
1 exhaust fan, set to fixed voltage, i'd try 9V first
1 PSU fan, controlled by PSU

Seal all side panel openings with black card board, check temps and adjust fan voltage + pwm settings

I got your point :D But I'm not talking about hardware, it's just the fact that dozens of security risks are not being patched atm in XP, so as long as you connect to the internet, some malicious software could sent destructive mails from your account and you'd have a hard time protecting yourself a...

Re: Any way to completely switch off the GPU when not needed

I hope you are well aware that running XP is a risk nowadays?

Might be time to turn to Win7, which has also a better power management. If your system can't run W7 at decent speed, it might be time to move to a new PC.

Kabini vs. BayTrail aka. pick your poison http://www.techspot.com/review/806-amd-kabini-vs-intel-bay-trail-d/page9.html And depending on the efficiency your PSU has, it might not matter which CPU to get, if your PSU is not able to serve low power with decent efficiency, since we're talking around 30...

Why can't you buy them any more?

USB 3.0 are doing the same job connected to an USB 2.0 port and deliver USB 2.0 speed.

Re: Which case and AIO liquid cooler for quiet X99 OC build?

AIO are simply for those, who need the performance and do not care much about noise. As said in the SPCR review, you can get nearly the same performance with an equal noise level or even better for half the money. If you have the room in your case and do not want to do extreme oc, that is. Going ful...

Welcome to SPCR!

You should give us some more info, which board is it exactly, which case, PSU and fans you are using?

And most important, which CPU cooler is being used?

If you could supply some pictures, we could see even more and might be able to help you better.

Your ATI 4350 is from 2009. Back then the idle power consumption was guessed around 10-12W http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=51914 Given that any modern Intel CPU beats your card using the integrated GPU in benchmarks, i highly doubt that the back-then lowest idle consumption woul...

Re: Are PicoPSU-like supplies the best option at low loads?

Just a thought that occured to me: Pico-PSU's reputation comes from the days before any PSU efficiency rating was invented. So compared to the best PSUs back then, their efficiency was unrivaled. But todays gold/platinum/titanium rated PSUs seem to have caught up in low power efficiency, so it reall...

Re: Any way to completely switch off the GPU when not needed

If your talking about a desktop pc, then the answer is no. There is no mechanism to switch off PCIe cards implemented. Most newer cards will power down to really low consumption when the monitor is going into power save. When using multiple monitors, some cards will not cut the power down as low as ...

Well, that is the main problem with "closed" boxes, if you happen to need a provider not contained, you are totally dependend on a software update by the manufacturer. And in most cases, those updates seem to be scarce. The raspberry will certainly not run windows, but XMBC is available: http://wiki...

I'd suggest going Intel or Crucial instead, albeit the new Toshiba's have earned good reviews, but it is probably to early to have some founded long time experience with those former OCZ products.

The B10 looks pretty restricted on the front intake. There seems to be no bottom hole or intake in this case, so cooling is dependant on the few openings on either side of the front fascia. Past Lian-Li modells with front door have shown that they suffer from restricted intake area, nearly forcing t...

Sry, i hav no experience with that one.

But nearly everthing on your list can be done by a WD TV box or even a raspberry pi, so you might get the same using less energy and you do not have to bother with Windows at all.

As for the Vidoeocard think about getting a GTX 750 or 750i. Those modells are considerably more powerful while generating considerably less noise.

Silencing a 7700 might end up being more costly than selling the card and getting a new one.

but isn't the point of speedfan that I set the parameters, irrespective of temp? If you don't want to have any temp dependend rpm, you won't need speedfan at all. Keep in mind that any 120mm fan reaching rpm of 800 or more can get louder than when spinning at 600 rpm. In addition the amount of air moved by different fans can result in different cooling whil...

IMHO we won't get 4k gaming that soon. Because as long as 4k gaming hardware isn't widespread or standard, publisher would have to supply 2 versions of any game, one 1080p and a 4k version. This means higher developing costs and depending on the engine used even twofold programming. Not very likely,...

Re: Hard Disk - can I turn it off?

The old school strategy for backup media is to keep them separated from the source. Keeping the disk inside of your backup source brings more risks. An external USB 3.0 2.5" HDD is a sufficient backup target for any Win7/8 PC and still small enough and hassle free, since it doesn't need external pow...

A 2nd HDD to prevent data loss? That's a fail, get an external HDD and do backups. RAID or a copy to another HDD is of no real use in order to prevent data loss in case of HW failure. The only thing that prevents data loss is a backup. Any kind of RAID just ensures availability, but if something goe...

In germany our local shops do mount coolers supplied by their customers, they might charge a few bucks premium for it, but they'll do it.

But yes, all of those will work fine, albeit the Thermalrights have an inferior fan compared to the Noctua.

I was already thinking that a tiny case like the Core V1 which still fits a GPU card, would have been the perfect small semi-passive build: fanless operation most of the time (with the Palit KalmX or a Strix in there), and safe gaming when placing the window cover back over the top panel and lettin...
