Tri-Cool Fans on a controller panel?
I ordered a case/cooling setup for an existing PC I have. I ordered a Zalman ZM-MFC1 controller panel to easily adjust fan speeds, but the case I ended up going with is the Antec P180 with the included Tri-Cool fans. I don't have any other fans to use. I don't need silence, just "quieter than generi...

...I solved this problem.... I ripped the door clean off. It was already flimsy from shipping, I finished the job. I highly recommend it, it's better for airflow - and thus silence - anyway. Isn't that what you bought it for?... -I was kind-of wondering about just taking it off too. Except maybe mo...

For the CPU cooler I looked at the Thermaltake Sonic Tower (also passive). What's the advantage of the Scythe Ninja? Just smaller overall? ..... I checked out passive GPU too, the Thermaltake Schooner but don't think I like the radiator sticking out the back. .....I even found one review that tried ...

Out Of Time: the DIY case is a wash
The DIY case I was working on is cancelled, due to several problems in the final stages. I'll put pics and comments up somewhere. I like the idea still but I know that I won't have time to bother with it for quite a while so I'm going with store-bought for now. As is so often the circumstances, I do...

...Thin surfaces will not help for air-borne noise absorption.... -Yes but in this use they don't need to. What I am trying is a case that has one metal box inside of another. The internal box is rubber coated and contains the hard-drives and fans (all mounted on sorbothane), the fans are located n...

I managed to strip most of the undercoating off, it was a mess. It still smelled several days later, and I doubt it would have appreciably dampened much of anything--it was simply way too thin. ----- I used clear silicone to cover the box again, got most of it done but can't do it all at once. The s...

.....that stuff is basically tar/bitumen and/or rubber (if rubberized) and you might just end up melting or burning it..... -Yea, I bought the 3M stuff, it says it's rubberized but it appears to contain a large percentage of tar. This must be the reason they don't use it on the inside of the cars.....

-I went and just tried doing the inside with undercoating. ----Good news is the undercoating is holding onto the aluiminum very well.... ----Bad news is that it doesn't seem to spray real thick, which is kinda good news because it smells really badly. It's not totally dry yet, but still. It's suppos...

The Mutemat is 19mm thick, about 16mm too much. I need something that thin when applied. ---- Also I tend to agree with some points in this thread: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=20987&highlight=mutemat ....that the sound-deadener is really controlling most of the noise heard outsi...

Liquid/spray noise insulation -?-
I need some noise insulation for the case I am doing. Because of the spaces I have to work with, the typical foam kits won't work, they're too thick. I only have room for maybe 1/16" to 1/8" for the noise insulation. Anybody tried using auto underbody coating or clear silicone sealant? I'm consideri...

-Generally speaking, cut them out. It harms nothing, they are usually hidden from view (the fronts are behind the faceplate and the rears are out of view anyway), and it improves airflow. ....I bought a couple generic cases to use as donors and the "case fan grilles" as they came were a joke! They w...

...I raid0 the 2xWD 120g HDD - it's actually faster than a 74GB raptor in most all tests.... -Cheap RAID chips (like what mobos come with built-in) tend to suffer reliability problems that a Raptor drive would not. If you are running such a system in RAID-0, it is considered prudent to back up your...

Sorbothane is naturally tacky and sticks to stuff. Keep this in mind if you are wanting to install hard drives or any other hardware into a "drawer"-type arrangement. If you pack sorbothane around the hard drives and slide them in, six months or a year later you might have a very tough time getting ...

I don't get it? You say you did it, then you tell everyone else not to do it??? BTW, I'll go you one further: I had already planned on doing the same thing, but without the water-cooling. Stand clear!!! <:D My justification is because there is no way the PS fan can be quieted well-it is positioned t...

Does sorbothane stick to hard drives if they are left sitting on it? I have some sorbothane I left sitting, with a small piece of it on top of a larger sheet. After a couple years of not being moved at all, I found that they were stuck together pretty good--I could pull them apart and neither was da...
