Re: Old horizontal HTPC case (full ATX)

I knew I was cutting it close but this is as close as you can get to not fitting but actually fit. It didn't look good with the plastic socket cover in but I knew the IHS was a little lower. Once I had the CPU in, I put the heat sink there, placed the top of the case on and felt for clearance throug...

Re: Skylake thoughts

I just got my i7-6700k and hopefully I'll be able to get to post and in to bios. I'll fool around with the fan control in my Gigabyte motherboard and let you know what it will do.

Re: Old horizontal HTPC case (full ATX)

I called Central Computer before lunch and their shipment of CPUs had just come in so I went over and picked mine up.

Now it's in my hands.

It might take me a while to get together even a preliminary report but I will be working on it.

Re: Old horizontal HTPC case (full ATX)

I got some RAM and "flush cutting pliers" so I now have all the hardware to put together a working PC. The ram I got is Corsair DDR4 3200 2x4GB which I am going to use to see how memory overclocking effects performance. It's on the approved memory list for my motherboard so it should be good. Now I ...

Re: Old horizontal HTPC case (full ATX)

First issues: The VRM inductors are through hole pieces and some of the exposed leads are under the location of the CPU back plate. I think they would touch if I tightened everything up. Since the back plate is steel, that is no good. Luckily the clearance is tight because the leads were left pretty...

Re: Old horizontal HTPC case (full ATX)

I just heard Central Computers was getting Skylake CPUs tomorrow so went over to enquire. They let me pay for a CPU that I can pick up tomorrow. I also received my Thermalright Macho 90 CPU cooler from Nan's Gaming Gear. They were the only US supplier I could find so I placed my order and I also ord...

Re: Suggestion for an external DC power brick

Yes, class V is the brick equivalent of 80+. The specs are out there but I'm not sure what they are. Pretty much all bricks are going to be Asian and there are plenty of no-name options but I like Dell bricks. Being brand name (with a decent reputation), I'm sure their Asian bricks are put through a...

Make sure you get the right part number on the SM951, there is an NVMe version and an AHCI version. NVMe is that faster one with less CPU overhead, etc.

Re: Request AX860i 6-pin connector pin out diagram

I think that is pessimistic, I've put together a quad core eight thread Xeon with 32gb ram, SSD, HDD and ODD (and an appropriately sized PSU) and got something like 23 watt idle (by the measurement of my kill-a-watt and Cyberpower UPS). Playing music should be less than 30 watts. A NUC or similar wi...

Re: Help me build my perfect PC, please :) ps: I'm new

I like a nice fan on my heat sinks because fanless is relying on air flow from something else. I don't want to leave it to chance. On the other hand, a lot of "fanless" heat sinks include fan mounting hardware. One bad thing about fanless heat sinks is that they compensate for poor air flow with siz...

Re: Help me build my perfect PC, please :) ps: I'm new

I have read that the NVMe drives can resume from sleep mode much faster. I also saw a demo of a PC with an Intel 750 doing 4k video editing at 24+ fps while a SATA SSD in the same PC could only do 10-14 fps due to the SATA bus limitation. You might not notice so much with less strenuous loading but ...

Re: Old horizontal HTPC case (full ATX)

Well, I'm getting screwed by Newegg. After buying my motherboard from them at IDF, they now are listing combos with i7-6700k CPU. I saw them this morning and wanted to buy. The problem is I don't want two motherboards for one CPU. I did a chat with their customer service people (when it worked a cou...

Re: Skylake thoughts

A Z170 motherboard with Alpine Ridge can also use the type C USB cable as a dual channel displayport or something. I'm not sure what the max resolution of the cable or iGPU is but I know it is enough for 4k. I'm sure it's no good for 3D gaming at that resolution but it should do the basics pretty we...

Re: Skylake thoughts

iGPU makes sense mostly in low power applications where discrete graphics are not possible. If you look at Broad well reviews, you can see that the Iris graphics aren't very good except in comparison to worse iGPUs and old to near obsolete low end GPUs. In a desktop PC with a socket, a crummy iGPU i...

Re: Old horizontal HTPC case (full ATX)

It came with two drive racks in the case, one positioned for the ODD slot and one centered. IMG_20150822_011346.jpg I have removed the center rack which was easy because both racks are screwed to the chassis rather than riveted or spot welded. IMG_20150822_011357.jpg With the central rack gone, ther...

I have returned from IDF with a bounty of new stuff and stories to tell.  I also went to the Flash Memory Summit last week and got some neat stuff which I will also show. This was my first IDF and I didn't know what to expect.  At FMS last week they said not to miss the key notes by the CEO so I pla...

Re: Skylake thoughts

So far, without a CPU, I am impressed with the board, the features list is outstanding. It does have 22 phase power and it is rated for DDR4 up to 3866 I think. Gigabyte has put some upgrade parts on this thing which I really like and it seems like a good price point if everything works as advertise...

Re: Proposed PC build. Would welcome suggestions / advice

I would suggest going for 2*8GB on the ram, if you use a lot of VMs you might need to upgrade to 32GB at some point and two free slots would let you do that. If you want better graphics than an i7-4790k, you might consider Broadwell with Iris graphics. If you want more than Iris, I suggest waiting f...

Re: Transforming Current PC to be Silent

I think the question is which case is easier to silence. If your HTPC is working, it's CPU/motherboard and GPU is the most modern combo and the tower case probably has the motherboard standoffs for mITX size motherboards. If yous Asrock motherboard has all the features you want, it might be a better...

Re: Old horizontal HTPC case (full ATX)

Oh, RAM: I talked with the guy at Micron's IDF booth, evidently 16GB DDR4 sticks will become available some time in September. I want to get two for a total of 32GB and the option of adding two more later for 64GB. He said that the bigger ram chips were just about the same as the old stuff in terms ...

Re: Old horizontal HTPC case (full ATX)

So I'm getting a Thermalright Macho 90. It's a 90mm tower, a bit cheaper than Noctua and by some reports it keeps up with some of the decent 120mm tower coolers. It should just fit inside my case, pretty much the most CPU cooler I can fit without a weird bent up design. It should be pretty impressiv...

Re: Planning a new system build

It's hard to recommend something I haven't used but look at the Asus Z170-A motherboard I have seen a similar Z170-AR which is mostly the same too. If you compare features, it has some that are nice without a huge price (comparatively). The Krait Gaming seems nice too but the differences are enough ...

Speaking of Gigabyte and Alpine Ridge, Newegg has an IDF attendee special on the Gigabyte Z170 Gaming G7 motherboard. It looks well built, has a lot of nice features and at the show the price is only a small premium over the MSI and Asus motherboards I have been looking at. The review I have found m...

I think I have found my CPU cooler. There are a lot out there that will fit but not many that have good cooling and low noise. The one I want is hard to find in the US but I think I found one. I'm waiting to hear from the retailer because I had a question but I'll name the cooler once my order is in...

Re: Going to the Flash Memory Summit tomorrow, what to ask?

There was a discussion by some industry analysts (not Intel or Micron), all conjecture but well informed. Their conclusion is that its a type of phase change memory and the lithography will be expensive. It will also require changes to the memory bus that are proprietary and not in the JEDEC spec so...

Re: NH-D15 or smaller cooler??

A big tower cooler is great in theory. If it fits and the fan speed is right you will get low temps and low noise. Along with that its also big and heavy. I like a small computer so I usually can't use the really big heatsinks but if you have the space its still a few pounds hanging off the motherbo...

Re: Going to the Flash Memory Summit tomorrow, what to ask?

I learned a lot but unfortunately not how to get an M.2 NVMe SSD any time soon. I did see the 2tb SSDs and they are tempting but saddled with the SATA interface. The motherboard I am looking at has an M.2 slot and also a SATA express port so today I was looking to see if any of the new big SSDs had ...
