Re: How to reduce noise in my setup (and 140mm fan choices)

You could consider the Arctic Cooling F14 140mm PWM, which has a fluid dynamic bearing. The interesting point about this fan is that it is semi-passive, that is the fan stays off which PWM duty cycle is under 40%. When it does start it is at about 600 rpm; top speed is around 1300 rpm. It is not a t...

Re: Choosing a heatsink to go with a A12x25?

I run the S12A PWM at around 250 rpm when the machine is idling, and I can't hear it. It probably comes down to how low your ambient noise levels are. I also use the NF-P12 PWM which runs a touch slower/quieter. But if I were to buy a new Noctua 120mm now it would be the A12x25. If it came to non-No...

Re: Arctic Freezer 33 CO vs Cryorig H7

You could consider the single fan Scythe Mugen 5 plus an extra Kaze Flex 1200 rpm PWM fan. But this would only make sense if you felt you had to have two 1200 rpm PWM fans. If you don't plan to push fan speeds over 800 rpm then the two fan Mugen 5 PCGH makes more sense.

...the Mugen 5, having more heatpipes, has on paper better heat-dissipating capacity than the Kotetsu Mark II. If the reviews on the web are to be believed the Mugen 5 is indeed a better performer than the Kotetsu Mark II. So taking everything into account it seems to me that the Mugen 5 PCGH would...

Re: Options for new office pc

The only issue with the Scythe Mugen 5 PCGH seems to be that with some overclocked CPUs the maximum fan speed of 800 rpm can be an issue. For this reason the Kotetsu Mark II, equipped with the same 1200 rpm fan as the regular single fan Mugen 5, could be enough. But what 'enough' is probably depends...

I must admit I had missed the Fractal R6 could take 3 x 120mm fans but the various reviews/test results otherwise only seem to bear out what is already pretty evident: that the A12 is the go to fan if you want a 120mm Noctua.

Re: One or Two front intake fans?

When I've build systems for my gamer family members they always want the PSU positioned fan up. Their reasoning is that under gaming load conditions the PSU will act as an additional exhaust, clearing hot air away from the region below the graphics card. I have pointed out that this means that the P...

Re: Quiet cooler for a Ryzen 2600

The Scythe Mugen 5 Rev. B (AM4 brackets included) has a significantly better fan than the original Kotetsu. It is a Kama Flex PWM fan with a fluid dynamic bearing with a Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) of 120,000 hours; the Kotetsu is fitted with a GlideStream PWM fan which has a sleeve bearing with...

Re: How to reduce noise in my setup (and 140mm fan choices)

As I understand it, you have 2 x intake fans and 1 x exhaust. I think the biggest step forward you can take is to remove the ModuVent from the rear top exhaust and put a fan there. To try it, at no cost, you could consider putting the second rear fan of the NH-D15 there, or putting the D15 fan in th...

...One solution to reduce the noise generating disruptions to the inflow is to deploy an air straightening grill on the fan intake. There was of course the Nexus BeamAir which was designed to do precisely this but never caught on. https://nexustek.us/sites/nexustek.us/files/styles/product-main/publ...

Re: How good (quiet) are modern SFX PSU?

Platinum efficiency levels means that load temperatures should be lower, low enough given the right design to allow fanless units even in this form factor. See, for example, the jonnyGURU review of the Silverstone NJ450-SXL 450w unit . Yes, it is expensive - £164 in the UK. But if you really don't w...

Re: Which PSU to choose ?

Relative prices where you are might be one of the deciding factors. In the UK for example from my normal supplier the Corsair and Seasonic prices for the same capacity/spec are either the same or nearly the same. So the Corsair RM850x Gold V2 is £100 and so is the Seasonic Plus Gold 850w. Which you ...

You can reposition the drive cage horizontally so, according to Silverstone, a PSU between 140 to 200mm long will fit.

Having used both Gold and Platinum power supplies I would say there was no difference between them in terms of reliability and instability. On the complicated design point it seems to me that a more PSU complex design may well be more reliable if it has better quality components; less good quality c...

In short, 3 year old MX4 had slightly higher (around 1C) core temps than new MX4. Both ran slightly cooler (again, around 1C) than IC Graphite Thermal Pad. To me it means stop worrying about old paste. And don't expect any significant temperature improvements with graphite thermal pads but use them ...

Re: Intel's Z390 chipset

Intel's approach is not to run with the lowest number of cores at the lowest speeds but the maximum number of cores at the highest speed. This is on the basis of getting the current workload on the processor done more quickly, and in power terms more efficiently. One effect of this is that the numbe...

The fan profile shown by Fan Xpert seems to me to be showing that the Auto fan mode select has picked Voltage rather than PWM mode. As a consequence the minimum fan speed is right on the boundary between the fan running or not. This would explain the on/off effect on fan speeds that is being observe...

It seems most odd to me. The Scythe Kaze Flex 120 PWM is one of those fans which should not stop regardless of how low a PWM % duty cycle it is set to, including 0%. This is confirmed by the Fan Xpert profile below from the review of the Scythe Mugen 5, which features the same fan, by Modders-Inc : ...
