The quietest 120mm dc fan is the Nexus. Even at a full 12V though it doesn't move a lot of air, but if it moves enough air for your needs it can't be beat for quietness by any other 12V dc fan. The other option is the Globe 1202512L. It isn't as quiet as the Nexus but it's miles ahead of the rest of...

I have one of the Papst 6224 24v fans from all electronics. It is NOT quiet, even when undervolted as slow as it will go. If you want quiet you'll either need to use something like the Nexus 120x25 fans, or the Globe 120x25 (somewhat noisier at all speeds, but flows a lot more air at 12V if you need...

I'll second that motion. Nexus is the quietest with almost no motor or bearing noise, mostly wind noise. Globes have more bearing noise at all speeds, but a lot higher airflow at the top end if you can put up with the noise at those rpms. Basically use the Nexus 120mm fans unless they just can't sup...

Re: Voltage control for a thermal-controlled fan?
P.S. I stopped folding and let the system cool for a few minutes. Then restarted. The fan in my PSU does not get a visible 12V kickstart.[/quote]
The kickstarts only occur on power-up.

There are axial fans much larger. However all the DC brushless fans larger than 120mm that I've tried are not quiet even when undervolted, (they are noisier than even the worst 120mm fans). If you want to use a large fan on your case I would definitely get an AC fan and undervolt it. You can find AC...

This was my experience also with the 120x38mm Panaflo L1A's. The noise you are refering to is the coil switching noise in the motor. When the coils switch on they deliver a sudden torque pulse to the fan and the whole thing sounds like an idling diesel engine. This is aggravated by the large motor h...

I got 3 of those also, they were a little quieter than the current Panaflo's but they still have a lot of motor noise for me. Compared to the Nexus and Globes 120x25 they are pretty noisey. I've kind of given up on finding a quiet 120x38 brushless DC fan. I'm either going to use Nexus or Globe 120x2...

I also just got some OEM 120mm Panaflo's in. They are accually really quiet. Well at leat mine are. They are unaudible when undervolted at 5 volts and still push enough air to decently cool my case. At 7v you can just hear the whooshing of air and at 12 you hear a slight humming if you put your ear...

With the 7V mod you are essentially supplying current into the 5V line from the 12V line. If you supply more current than is being drawn by other devices in the system it will pull the 5V line above 5v and out of regulation. Then everything that is connected to the 5V line will be exposed to whateve...

Fanmates are just a transistor hooked up as an emitter follower with a pot connected to the base of the transistor to vary the output voltage. They are pure DC output, the drawback is a limited power rating because they get hot. Nope, they're based on a regulator circuit, like this . Cheers, Jan Yo...

Fanmate 1's look deceptively sealed up, however they pry open very easily. You can even do it with your fingernails. Pull down on the bit of plastic below the connector next to the knob. The other site to pull down is the plastic just under the cable on the other end. Up being with the knob facing u...

shouldn't be any problem running both fans on that connector. Your statement about the parallel configuration is correct. If you use a single resistor to drop the voltage and connect both fans after the resistor the fans may not start up at the lowest voltages or run at as low a voltage as if each f...

The Nexus fans I have also have both 3 and 4 pin connectors on them. I'd have to agree that the Nexus and Globe fans are the best I've found so far for undervolted 120mm fans, but they are only 25mm thick and do not flow air that well against backpressure such as that from a radiator. They are quiet...

Have you tried the OEM "Blue Label" Panaflos that Ralf used in his BQE? They're very nice and don't click/buzz/whine when undervolted. Of course they can't be run quietly at 12v though. Of the Sunon, Papst, and Panaflo the Sunon has the lowest motor impulse noise, probably because it's a 6 pole motor instead of 4. The Papst has the most bearing noise, followed closely by the Sunon, scrape...scrape. The Panaflo is by far the quietest on bearing noise, soon as you remove power from a...

Well I've started to dissect some fans to see if I can't modify the electronics to smooth out the switching pulses which seem to cause the 'diesel engine idling' noise out of these panaflo, papst and sunon fans. Maybe I can come up with something, I don't think I'm going to find an off the shelf 120...

Are there any quiet 120mm x 38mm fans?
I've been looking for 120mm x 38mm fan that's quiet when undervolted for a water cooled system. I have had no luck in finding a decent quiet fan of that size. I tried Panaflo FBA12G12L1A's, Papst 4212L and Sunon KED1212PMB3-6A. They all have a lot of motor and friction noise, the Papst is probably t...

I am also having trouble finding quiet 120mm fans. I got some 120mm x 38mm panaflo L1As, but they are not quiet when undervolted, the motor makes a chugging noise sort of like a diesel engine idling. I then shelled out for some Papst 4212Ls. They also have a lot of motor noise and vibration. Even my...

My 80mm Panaflo L1A's run down to about 300rpm, although not with the T-balancer. The T-balancer PWM seems to cause a lot of problems with fans at low speeds including adding noise. I find it essential to HEAVILY filter the T-balancer outputs. Try putting something like a 47 ohm resistor in series w...
