Okay, I'm more or less convinced to return the Kingston drive. OCUK does accept returns and I didn't peel off the shrink wrap. OCUK has a 'this week only' deal on an OCZ Summit. OCZ Summit Basically it's a fiver off. Anyone know about these drives? This drive uses a Samsung controller with a ton of...

I wonder what could be accomplished with enough training and self-discipline. Kind of like the Mentat from Dune. Well, they did have drugs too, so not just training and self-discipline. I doubt it would be much, else it would be more wide spread. You can train to have high tolerance for pain but th...

Well the hope was it wouldn't matter too much, since the <5mm clearance is only on one side of the (large) heatsink surface, covering <10mm of it. The rest of the heatsink (including all the part directly above the CPU) should have >50mm clearance (i think about 60mm). Since fans are circular, I'm ...

Might it be that the Kingston drive is okay to keep? I'd say no. Random writes, the cause of the stuttering problems that made JMicron infamous, are still very low. From some other reviews, it looks like this drive is just fast enough that it won't stutter, but I'd be concerned; knowing that perfor...

Most children could also tell you that they would have had to have worked 12 hours a day during the industrial revolution. Bear in mind that the E6300 is a Pentium Dual Core (not a Core 2 Duo as the 7xxx series. The differentiation is mainly marketing. The only missing feature from the E6300 is 2MB cache versus 3MB of the E7x00 series but it gains Virtualisation support which is arguably more useful. I’d rather have ...

Is dampening very useful in reducing PC noise?
No.

Is it useful at all in reducing PC noise?
Maybe.

Do people waste too much time thinking about it when they should probably just go ahead and suspend their HDD or break the bank on an SSD?
Yes.

Thanks very much, I can understand it now. Though in theory there is the so called sound masking effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auditory_masking), different sounds have different characters (e.g. different spectrum and tones). Unless it becomes somewhat "white" like noise (flat spectrum), our...

The margins are so thin I'd hate to be in the PC component industry at the moment - especially hard drives. It's difficult to differentiate your product and selling price is king. That's why manufacturing capability trumps design. If you do innovate, you can get it to market faster/cheaper; and if ...

I think <5mm of clearance for your fan is untenable. I think typically you want more like 20+ mm. Given that this is is a low profile fan, I think the situation is even worse (ie lower profile will work even worse in a low clearance situation).

Why not add a fan inside the closet. Nothing fancy, just a little floor/desk fan to better circulate the air. I'd think the kind that can be tilted to point straight up would work best. Good airflow right outside the case should make about a 5C temperature difference.

I think the SPL in even a very quiet room is actually around 20dBA. The problem is that your ears can hear things that are well below the ambient noise floor. I'd say even 10dBA below the noise floor is hardly a problem (until you get ambients < 10dBA, as 0dBA is the limit for typical hearing). Scor...

I'm sure Intel would rather you buy a Celeron, actually. We can only speculate. Last I checked, 1Ku pricing for the Atom 330 was $43 - exactly the same as the E1400. Rumor is the Celeron E3200 will also be clocking in at $43. So the question is which one costs less to manufacture for Intel? The Ato...
