Re: At what temp does instability usually arise?
If you're worried, you could always re-apply better thermal paste to the heatsinks, and use thermal glue to add heatsinks to components that don't have them. Also, the temperature issues arise at will be different for each component, and most of them don't have temperature probes.

Ah, the Kozuti isn't fanless; the fan is just under the fins. That said, if you aren't going to have the optical drive installed often, the Shuriken will be fine.

Also, I'd seriously focus on heatsinks that bolt through the motherboard. Pushpins are ridiculous.

Re: Unexplainable tempurature rise from 2500k
Of course. The fan was already at max. Must be a change in what the CPU is doing. I would measure the temperature of the heatsink. And the power draw. Well, it confirms that the fan wasn't slowing down, so I do think it was worth doing. Total power draw would be interesting. I'm out of ideas for a ...

Re: Unexplainable tempurature rise from 2500k
It's been connected to the 3-pin header since day one, I discovered the fan could spin at ~800rpm minimum compared to ~1000rpm minimum from the 4-pin header. It stays at constant ~1500rpm IIRC after a few minutes of Prime95. Nevertheless I'll see if anything changes when my True Rev. C arrives and ...

Re: Unexplainable tempurature rise from 2500k
The behavior is a result of temps during Prime95 landing close to target for the fan to spin up as set by uefi. The fan will kick in and out for a short while until stabilizing. What you would expect to see would require a lower target temperature. Ah, I see, the Kozuti I use stays on and just slow...

Re: Please check my new Intel G620t HTPC build before I buy
One omission might be some sort of video output. The G620T is cheaper than the i3-2100T because it doesn't include a GPU, doesn't have hyper-threading and runs at a lower clock rate. The G620T was just the processor for a WHS2011 server I built a few weeks ago since the server runs headless, but fo...

Re: Sanity check build I'm about to buy?
Thanks, I've ordered the Nexus NX-5000 PSU (a bit more than I wanted to spend, at £83 with shipping even from the cheapest online shop - but worth it if you say it's important for quiet :) ). I think I'll do my initial build without a heatsink if it's not vital, and see how hot/loud it runs. I'm al...

Re: Unexplainable tempurature rise from 2500k
You know, the more I look at your graphs, the more I think the PWM settings are wonky. The Prime95 graphs show the temperature spiking, then drooping. Mine do NOT do that, and I've never seen that on any of my machines, ever. P95 always causes that curving ramp up until it hits a zone of a few degre...

Re: Unexplainable tempurature rise from 2500k
Yeah, if the fan speed was targetting a temperature I imagine something like that could happen... but would it be so slow? Over 10 minutes of the fan slowly ramping up followed by such a quick temperature rise that ends abruptly? Again, I don't know, since I've never used a heatsink with pushpins. ...

Re: Old system, let's do it silent...
I don't think the electrical noise from the PSU means it's on its last legs; plenty of them make noise from day 1. I'd say glue the coils and see if that helps - worst case it dies and needs to be replaced anyway, which was your only other option to begin with. Glue is cheap to try. Another option m...

Why the same one Anandtech used to overclock a 2500k to 4.5GHz, Intel stock cooler. That said I'm avaiting delivery of a Thermalright True Rev. C. I was just trying to get an idea if the ~70*C was a reasonable temperature or not. I have a 2500k cooled with a Kozuti in a GD-05 with all the ca...

Just for fun, what heatsink and CPU fan are you using?
Edit: Also, FYI for everyone, x34 should be a turbo mode for a 2500k. Base clock is 3.3GHz.

Re: Intel 2100 and G620 stock cooler enough?
From what I understand, it's not horrible (assuming we're not talking about the low-profile version that comes with the T processors), but it depends on the background noise. How quiet does it need to be? Personally, I'd get something that didn't use push-pins and had easy fan replacement for when i...

Re: AMD A8-3850 Quad Core Desktop APU (updated July 10)
Lawrence: One thing I found interesting was the GPU performance graphics. Comparing the integrated Intel HD against the APU showed almost identical numbers. Pretty impressive that AMD was able to match Intel's performance. One thing I get a real kick out of is that most people don't understand what...

Re: Mini ITX HTPC
I'm not sure I'd bother with the T processor, honestly - they're just downclocked versions, not superior design or examples, and the 65w TDP versions never consume nearly 65 watts in real life. Of course, the i3 T processors don't cost much extra, but I'd rather have the 2105 or 2125, personally, an...

Re: [New build] HTPC build, but also my main computer. Advi
I'd be cautious about using the Shuriken - with an optical drive, the GD-05 only has 70mm of clearance for the CPU heatsink, and the Shuriken is 65mm, leaving only 5mm of breathing room. That's the reason I used the Kozuti on mine (and I used a 2500k like you). Alternatively, you could use a Big Shu...

Re: HTPC shuts down randomly - reboot or power off, cause?
I think you may have nailed it! I assumed (and shouldn't have) that it would give me an "Updates successfully installed" message or the like upon restarting, and it didn't, but the uptime says it came back on at ~3:17am, and when I checked the Windows Update settings it was set to automatically inst...

HTPC shuts down randomly - reboot or power off, cause?
So I built an HTPC/ gaming rig, with the Ceton and graphics card not yet purchased because I wanted to get the base machine solid first (and the games I'm currently playing are old and work perfectly on SB graphics). The machine is stable enough to run 4xPrime95 and Furmark for hours without hitting...

Re: Scythe Kozuti Low Profile CPU Heatsink
I just installed a Kozuti this morning. I built a 2500k HTPC in a GD-05 and here were the considerations for a heatsink: All towers - no chance, 70mm clearance Big Shuriken - out because I'm using low-latency Ripjaws with a heatspreader Shuriken - out because it only leaves 5mm above the fan NT-01 -...

Building a wooden HTPC case... advice?
Since no one seems to make an HTPC case quite like I want, I want to build one myself. Mind you, by "myself" I mean "give the design to a carpenter I know", so the details of woodworking are not my concern. However, this guy is not a computer person, so everything technical has to be covered by me. ...

I have to agree with francis, ambient temperatures can be an important factor. AC is not always desirable. While aircon is the norm over here, most people don`t keep it on all the time. When the ambient is in excess of 40 degrees (which is often is summer) you`re almost guaranteed to get cramped mu...

Yea, .04 dB.... well, nothing more I can add to that. Actually, it was and is necessary for SPCR reviews -- perhaps not as much for the improved ability to measure / differentiate at super low levels but for the improved insulation from external noise. The frequency & level of air and ground traffic is high enough to prevent/interrupt low level record...

In reality, a +,- 1 dB level of accuracy would be good enough for what we're trying to do. As I've repeated here umpteen times, the absolute SPL level is not that important; sound quality aspects take precedence over SPL almost all the time. Typically, a +3 dB component that has a smoother quality ...
