I have a WD800JB too and its definetly the loudest piece of hardware on my PC now. You can quiet down the platter arm to inaudible levels by using this little program, but you can't do much with the spinning whine that you get. User Guide: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/ftool_userguide.pdf Do...

Everything you've stated is pretty much right. As for your question, "why don't we see more high efficiency PSUs?" That's a pretty good question, isn't it? What if I told you that they're working as best they can and that if you sort the most efficient PSUs available, you'll get a list of the most ...

Well, at first I thought is was my PSU and case fans that were causing all the noise, then I switched to a fanless PSU and lowered all my fan speeds and to my biggest surprise the HDD was causing that awful whining and high pitched "Dell" quiet sound. 1. First get a fanless PSU or a Seasonic Tornado...

Of course they work....why do you suppose all the new designs employ heatpipes? Getting one to run passive is another story. And strictly depends on your own setup. Marketing hype, 99.9% of people jump at the newest and fastest labelled performance specs. I know heatpipes work in high end mis...

The hitatchi feature tool does work on WD drives. At least it did on mine. Thanks, this little program did wonders on the seek noise, I enabled it for AAM from the 255 to 128 setting(want kind of units are these ?) and now the seek noise is almost inaudible, but what can I use to reduce spindle spe...

A bit of Googling leads me to believe that it's nothing more than the typical AAM sort of application. These work by changing the seeking action of the heads and probably do give a slight bit of a performance hit. It seems like the company that developed this software has disappeared and the last u...

1 60mm CPU fan Delta @3000rpm I have one of those in a box that was used before I started quieting my PC, it is awfull! extremely noisy! EDIT: However I do sometimes use it if I need gobs of airflow and something goes wrong, it si really tiny and blows a ton (sounds like a lite-on at 52x though...,...

Re: Replacement passive sink for a 9550?
Hi, Recently purchased a Sapphire 9550 128MB card which has come with a fan on it. I do notice, however, that many of these cards from other vendors come passively cooled, so I'm presuming I'd have no problem swapping the fan for a passive sink? If so, what would anyone recommend I replace it with?...

Alright its New Year's Eve and my local PC store phones me and wakes me saying my Phantom has arrived, so I go get it and install it and here are the results: First Glance The PSU is nicely packaged in a slick glossy pictured box and inside a high density foam box protects the PSU from damage if dro...

Does modifying some performance components on your car require it to pass DOT again ? ...NO !!! Modifyin...

i also had pretty weird behaviour when the floppy (data) cable was plugged the wrong way : seeking for a long time at the boot and loading very slowly sometimes, or not POSTing otherwise. it was quite hard to detect, and confusing especially with a new mobo Yeah, I have exprieneced that a few times...

Guess what ?, I'am a InWin freak too, had a G500 for my old AT and just recently changed from my A500 with hard foam dampening all around that I had for ages to a Kingwin KT-424-S because InWin doesn't make any aluminium cases. My A500 was perfect with the exception of the side mounted PS which limi...

Update - ATI 9100 Temps and Heatsink Options
I just removed the intergrated fan/sink on my ATI 9100 Radeon that was causing more ruckus than all my 5 fans combined. Had to heat up the sink with a heat gun to soften the epoxy and pulled the sink off with a pair of pliers what are my options in going fanless on this BGA chipset ?, would ideally ...
