John, I am in the process of building a system that closely matches yours (unless the Granite Bay motherboards come onstream in the next week or so - I won't wait long for them because they are testing only marginally faster than the 845PE and don't OC as well). I will probably go with the Seasonic,...

Hmmmn? I never said they were the cheapest, if you check my message... they are nonetheless well below the cost of the brand-name units that test best in terms of voltage regulation etc. so caution seems warranted. You're comparing apples and oranges when you cite the Seasonic at $30 - it's a 175 wa...

Coolmax noise calculations

I think I'll probably go Seasonic - if I can find a Canadian source.... Just pulled the figures for the 470 Watt Coolmax from the graph on the unit: at 30C, the 3 fans are going at 1500 RPM; at 40C, 2000 RPM; 50 C, 2500. These revs seem pretty low, but there are of course three fans. Somewhere Mike ...

Source found...

Found an American source for these:

http://www.goroyalpc.com/submain.asp?m_ ... ction=list

Their cheapness makes me wonder about the power output quality, even if they are quiet... probably not suitable for a high-end setup until some tests are in.

Canadian source for Seasonic

Anyone know of one? Looking for the 400 watt version... haven't found any yet via the Web.

Thanks,

PSU choices...

Thing is, I will be getting a P4, and they draw their ~ 9A (when OC'ed) from the +12 volt line - I have found that after doing the caluculations for my system as suggested by a link given somewhere here that this +12 V power is the critical figure to look at - there is always plenty on the 3.3 and 5...

Anyone tried a Coolmax?

Those of us looking for a 400 watt+ power supply that is quiet don't have too many good options right now. I was wondering if anyone had tried the new Coolmax PSUs - they are getting great reivews the last few weeks showing rock-solid rail voltage at load, and although they have no fewer than THREE ...

Kits

There's a new w-cooling kit out from Swiftech that has tested very well elsewhere. It's the same cooling setup they use in their great (but expensive) Q-Power barebones case; reviews have indicated that it is both very effective and quiet (can't hear pump mounted in case via Velcro; two 25db 120mm M...

For the P4 review... + a comment on Frostytech

Wonderful review Mike, and I am really looking forward to your P4 followup.... You're probably already aware of them, but some suggestions for HSs to look at from my recent review-reading binge: Swiftech MCX4000 Thermalright SLK-478 (Nov. release in US) Alpha PAL8942 Any ideas as to when your review...

New Samsung drives - lower bel than ATA V

Check out this review of new Samsung models, e.g. the SP8004H - they incorporate some new sound-reduction technology and according to this review appear to be pretty snappy for a 2 meg cache drive: http://www.techwarelabs.com/reviews/storage_memory/samsung_40_80gb/ Too bad SS doesn't offer a 8 meg v...

Seeking experiences with WD 7200 100/120 GB...

I am trying to decide whether to build my RAID array with 2 120 gig WD special editions, or wait a month or so until the fluid-bearing Maxtor versions are available. I had read in some store's user reviews that nearly everyone found the WDs quiet but one person commented on a high-pitched whine. I'd...

If you examine carefully the way the pins and jacks mate, you can see that there is a fair amount of play in each mated pair. The ATX plug from PSU#1 may fit fine in mobo#1; but a couple of pins in the plug from PSU#2 are slightly off. MBM5 results would favor PSU#1. If the tester's motherboard pin...

Then you will understand that while MBM5 tells you the voltages on the mobo, it does not tell you the cause of low voltages. The drop could easily be happening in a couple of poor contact points in the ATX connector, caused by looseness, contact surfacr deterioration from overuse and age, or oxidat...

After typing a lengthy note on this topic, I clicked the preview button and rather than previewing the note the system asked me for my pw again and my note had completely vanished! :?
