Re: Modern mid- and high-end fanless laptops?
If you go the extra step using NotebookCheck's search option, you can select fanless, laptop, and age (say 2020 to 2022) and find a handful of devices. Using the processor generation option seems to fail. You'd have to sort thru the Atom stuff to find the few higher performance devices.

Re: Strapping NF-A12x25's to a RTX 3070
To a point, I disagree. The 120x25mm fans I strapped onto a gfx card were whisper level audible at 500rpm when used as case fans. With the added resistance of the gfx card heat sink, they'd be louder at the same rpm. So, for over engineered solutions like the NF-A12's on a gfx card, 500rpm wouldn't ...

Yeah. We'd also get back to the discussion on it'd be nice if gfx card bios permitted fan speeds down in the 500rpm range.

Re: New Motherboard Help
Also, I'm thinking of getting the Asus PRIME Z690-P D4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard. Is it compatible with my 2 hard drives? You have 2 SATA SSDs + 2 (I'm assuming) SATA Hard drives. The mobo has 4 SATA ports. If you have an Optical drive or something else that needs a SATA port, then you will be short....

Re: New Motherboard Help
Under $50? not really. Under heavy loads, the i5-12600K can consume a fair bit of power. I'd lean toward a larger cooler than the Kotetsu, like the Fuma 2 @$60 +$8 for the LGA1700 adapter ( SCMK-1700 ). Or, the Noctua NH-14S for $80 plus the free adapter you'll need to get from Noctua . Some Noctua ...

Re: New Motherboard Help
Just a quick note for right now: New CPU = New socket (LGA1700). Everyone is rolling out socket adapters for existing inventory as well as updating the new production runs. What this means to you - Scythe isn't supporting the original Kotetsu with their adapter. So, you'll need a new cooler and adap...

I think the implication is new production runs of existing models will come with the new adapter plate, but there is still a lot of inventory out there w/o it.

Scythe announces socket upgrade kit for $8.
In addition to the mounting upgrade kit, most current Scythe coolers will also include LGA1700 mounting materials soon.

It'll be interesting to see how performance improves with the Snail fan and whether it causes Scythe to also have an S version of the Fuma 2 and Ninja 5.

Re: Strapping NF-A12x25's to a RTX 3070
Most of the cards start their fans with 700-800 rpm and I don't know why it's like that compared to coolers and case fans usually starting with ~300 rpm. Maybe lower speeds are not effective on quite closed, built-up GPU coolers and would sentence cards to thermal throttling. 60-something on chip s...

Re: Strapping NF-A12x25's to a RTX 3070
The question is how "loud" is this ~1000 rpm on this heatsink. NF-A12x25 are one of the fans with smallest noise increase with the speed and need of them running is only during load when anything other make some noise, so maybe it just doesn't make sense to make this card even quieter. On the other...

Re: Strapping NF-A12x25's to a RTX 3070
I bet you could simply change the fans for the Noctua NF-A12x25 LS-PWM , and very likely end up with much lower rpms, probably around 600rpms. Don't think it'd work. The sensor reports the fan speed and the pwm controller would just adjust the pulse width for the min 1k speed. This is what I saw on...

Re: Strapping NF-A12x25's to a RTX 3070
Yeah, I strapped a couple of 120mm PWM fans onto an old MSI GTX 760 Gaming (I think) card. Did wonders...but was limited by the cards min 1k fan speed. Asus stuck with the ~1000rpm min fan speed for this card, even though the fans can go much slower and it would allow for a much lower speed vs temp ...

Glad you were able to resolve it. Anytime I update the BIOS, it also requires a reset - I always remove the battery before the reset. Seems to work for me.

Re: my experience with 6TB Red Plus vs old 3TB Red
If your storage needs remain "low", you could try a 2.5" drive. Seagate BarraCuda 5TB goes for ~$160 and list specs of idle 26dB, seek 27dB. Stuck with SMR, though.
My 2TB Red from the same era (might be 2 years younger) is still running fine.
