Re: hard drive upgrade question / recommendation

5400 RPM drives work without problems as a boot drive; they're just slower. I would get the Samsung F3, 1TB, 7200 rpm drive. They're quiet and run cool, which is more of an issue with an iMac than most PC's. You do know how to change the hard drive in an iMac, don't you? It's nothing like PC and not...

Re: My screen resolution is blurry always.Graphics card prob

Poor image quality with LCD displays and VGA input generally have nothing to do with cables. The problem is a low quality, low bandwidth analog section at one or both of the ends. It can be to graphics in the PC (D/A converter, or analog line drivers) or the input section of the monitor (A/D convert...

I have a 2T, F4 data drive in my WHS. I installed and ran the tool (made by Acronis). It reports the drive as Not a Samsung Advanced Format Disk, and a greyed out icon for the drive indicates Optimally aligned partition.

Probably the best place for news and information on WHS is We Got Served: http://www.wegotserved.com/ There are a number of knowledgeable folks who actually aren't sad to see Drive Extender, in it's current implementation, dropped. It made setting up shares more difficult, data was stored in a propr...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide

Living in a house, that you own, has lots of advantages. I have my WHS in the basement and I can drill whatever holes needed to run cables as needed for a faster, wired system. In WHS the HDs can be set to turn off to save power; however, the OS drive never shuts down.

Re: WHS vs Windows 7 for NAS/Application server?

WHS probably does backup better than Win 7 not only because it's automatic, but because it can do a bare metal restore of a PC. While there is no fine grained control of where files get stored, if folder duplication is turned on, then the duplicated folder will be on a different physical drive (more...

Re: Building my new rig : why undervolt? Seems dumb.

Those T connectors, AKA Scotch Locks, are for 14 - 16 gauge wire and would not displace the insulation for those fan wires. The red version for smaller gauge wire might work, but they are about 3x bigger than the connector on the end of the wire.

For that case and a mini ITX MB any thing more than integrated graphics isn't a great bet, and for a HTPC not needed.

... If you want it to be completely automated, then the backup has to be on 24/7 (unless it's sophisticated enough to wake itself up just for the backup job, then go back to sleep. I don't know of any that smart.) WHS with Lights Out only installed on the server would do just that. Wake up the serv...

Trying to push air in an enclosed box, like a computer case, over anything over very small distances, or through a duct, is like trying to push a rope. It's not like water coming out a hose nozzle. Air flow will be from high pressure areas to low pressure areas.

Hello, thanks for the great review. I have a question: does this Box turn on and off with the pc? All digital systems/subsystems have a Bit Error Rate (BER). They are pretty low, i.e., 1x10^-18. Run the system long enough and there will be a bit error, and if it's in the memory the program will throw an error.

There may be a measurable, but not audible difference. Granted, if someone places ...
