I think there's still the question of whether this is really even an issue - it's entirely possible that it's simply the wrong value being reported by firmware.
WD Green drives aren't exactly failing in droves like the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives are at the moment.

Suppose you want 2TB of capacity for a 24/7 server. From a power/noise standpoint, what's the best combination of drives? Wait a week or two for the Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green (looks like it is no longer vaporware). Single HDD, should be low noise like the rest of the GPs, high GB/W ratios fo...

I wonder with the advent of ever cheaper SSDs if WD correctly called the large storage market with the GP/green line and these large AND fast drives are out of touch? Looks like you don't get much more, other than heat and noise, over 5400rpm drives. Hmm, 60GB SSD and 1TB GP drive would be schweet ...

Sandisk announce G3 SSD - 120GB for $249!
Sandisk have a new SSD about to hit the shelves - sounds like with a proprietary controller chip, not the JMicron. Available in capacities of 60, 120 and 240GB, the unit MSRPs are $149, $249 and $499, respectively. http://driveyourlaptop.com/products/sandisk-ssd-g3- Fantastic price point! Almost dow...

Have a look at the specs in my signature - that's my home server for virtualisation. All of my VMs run from a single 300GB VelociRaptor - but disk issue slows them down horribly if I try to start several concurrently, so if you have two or more VMs that are disk intensive, consider the suggestion of...

HDT1284 has four heat pipes, 1283 has three. I would assume that HDT1284 is the better for this reason. Actually the 1283 seems to have better performance - the three heatpipes ALL make contact with a Core 2 sized CPU, whereas of the four heatpipes on the 1284 - two make full contact, and two overh...

Probably my thread. My current solution (haven't been able to find a Novibes 2.5 in Australia) - I simply unscrewed the VR from the icepack, and left it sitting in it loose. Without being rigidly attached, the whine mine was producing is gone, and the temps stay under 30C most of the time. Given the...

Soft mounting fans
It's occured to me tonight that much of the sound from my Antec 300 is case vibration - and a lot of it stems from the case fans. Has anyone tried soft mounting the 140mm tri-cool fan in one of these cases using those rubber screw replacements?

This link was provided in StorageReview's WD20EADS thread: hdwd6400aacs.pdf Well that appears to be the first official confirmation that the 2TB drive is not vaporware! edit - just did a Google search - that PDF only appears in one search result listing and it's not on the WD website. Where did it ...

The thread mentions that the Apex drives have two controller chips and a RAID chip. So not BS, but true internal striping.
The real question I think is whether these drives have onboard cache or not.
There's also mention of "Apex 2" in the works - so these SSDs will be the first with the technology.

ANOTHER new OCZ SSD - Apex with internal RAID 0!

What temperature is your VelociRaptor?
Took the plunge tonight and tore that black sticker off the icepack, and tried my new torx bit out on the VelociRaptor - it's now sitting on a foam pad in the bottom of my machine. RIP mosquito! Finally believe it is a near-silent drive. Temps immediately jumped from ~24C average to 37C, so I flippe...

You can check this with
I've just checked mine (2 x WD10EADS in mdadm RAID 1) - drives have 410 hours of use, but only a load cycle count of 211. That's under Ubuntu Server 8.10.
Code: Select all
smartctl -A /dev/sda

Re: Looking for heatsinks... that match...
The best combo I've seen in terms of matching are the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 + Xigmatek Porter N881 chipset cooler I've got that combo - I haven't found the need for RAM cooling yet. Might add another directed fan to cool a motherboard hotspot (mosfets near RAM) before I add anything else. Holding a fa...

I'm scared to ask with two 40mm fans... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817998037 Does anyone have one of these, and how loud is it?
