Your statements seem to be true, I verified them with the WD staff and was told the the RPM speed is fixed and cannot be changed after the tuning that's done in factory. IntelliPower merely means that based on an algorithm - the RPM will be around 5400 but not precisely the same 5400 speed for ever...

I remember that rod, but I don't think it's necessary. Greasing up the heatpipes have always been a messy business But the contact area is so large that you don't really need that much precision. Use whatever tool you can find I say. A folded piece of stiff paper does the job.

If you have a good 12V brick then I see no reason to go with a WI version of the picoPSU, unless you have one laying around already.

I love cables. Through them I can transfer a ton of information with very little hassle. Is the work required when installing the stuff really that hard? I zip tie everything down under the desk. I don't even use a cordless mouse, though I can see that they make sense.

I would use the adapter as a last resort. It's just a resistor, and using a resistor is an inefficient way to slow down a fan.

In my experience you will have electronic noise, one way or the other. Especially if it's a system that will do somewhat heavy stuff like gaming. Why not make it a goal to place the spinning storage in the other room? I would not want all my storage to be SSD, I don't trust the tech enough for that. I want SSDs close to me, HDDs out of hearing range and lots of redundancy.

Letting the HDD rest on a foam brick at the bottom of the case works fine. But make sure it's secure. Kitchen sponges sounds a bit flaky. Electronics side up for better cooling and maybe lower risk of ESD damage.

Put it in a Scythe Quiet Drive or similar to start with. I keep one of those on the shelf just in case. And then maybe suspend it using elastic cords.

Totally fanless works fine for normal use. And by normal use I mean that the system will not be doing anything heavy that fully loads it for hours on end. Don't go fanless if you intend to run protein folding simulations 24/7. :) I don't know anything about the MiniSYS T8 but I've built fanless syst...

With some Asus boards the auto overclock features might be enabled, or be set to auto with the same results. Make sure to disable those features.

While either would work, I'd go with the picoPSU-150-XT. It's a bit beefier and the price difference seems to be only 10$ or so.

More important is the brick. With a powerful brick you don't need to go with a factory underclocked T part even, unless you want to.

I agree, but there's a lot more fun to try out Linux without that noisy 7200 RPM HDD.

If you have a multimeter you could measure the voltage that the motherboard feeds to the fan. That would tell you if the fan itself slows down even if it receives 12V.

The Q-Fan controls should be OS independent. Maybe try update the BIOS unless you are already running the latest version.
