IMHO, i think people who have reported problems with running fans at 7V, have probably gone wrong somewhere else and blamed it on the 7V fan mod - either that or jus got the mod wrong :roll: Regarding B) try www.fanbus.com or www.7volts.com Jus go for a panaflo instead of papst, the difference isnt ...

You're right, you dont see it much - pretty much its only Alpha HSs which perform better with the fan sucking air off it, (because of the shroud they use?). Also if you experiment you will see that turbulence noise is much greater when there is an obstacle on the input side of the fan. Just try it b...

Think you misunderstood somewhere... I think the thermal resistance you are talking about is how they measure heatsink performance. Its measured in K/W (Kelvins per Watt - kelvins same as degrees celcius). It measures the rise in heat in your heatsink for each Watt off thermal energy put into it. Ie...

You will definetley get better performance from 2x80s rather than 1x92. For example, with L1a's:

80mm = 21dB - 24CFM
92mm = 27dB - 43CFM

2x80mm = 24dB - 48CFM - much better stats than 1x92mm

If its on your desk then you will probably benefit by putting the whole thing on a soft mat of some kind. Try lifting the computer of the desk and see if it is any quieter, if so then try putting it on a mouse mat or a folded towel or something.

Re: why don't PSUs do this...

I've been thinking that a PSU shpould come with a Li-ion battery that it charges up for the first few mins, then shuts itself down before it gets too hot and then back on when the cell is almost drained, having had time to cool down again. Charging batteries is far from efficient, and would create ...

Rusty, do you have a variable fan speed controller you can use to control the voltage to the fan? If so, try supplying it with a voltage just below the startup voltage, i think you'll find it will click like crazy! Im pretty sure this clicking is definetly louder than when it is at 12V.

Panaflo L1as at 5 or 7V are very quiet anyway, in a dorm environment you would probably never hear them. 1 on the CPU, 1 as an exhaust, maybe 2. The one at heatsink guide varies the voltage continuously from startup to max voltage.
