So it works fine when you get into windows? Jus messes up when its loading? Can you try underclocking it, to see if it is overheating?

was wondering about this, and i think that they probably are proportional, but how do you know that the line would (theoretically) pass through 0RPM at 0V?

If its linear then it satisfies y=mx+c, where y=RPM and x=Voltage. How do you know that c=0? jus wondering... :?

I would think it would be ok. Lets say at lowest fan volts, the zalman has 6V across it. That means it can withstand an amp of current.

Do you know the resistance of the zalman fan? & do you have a multimeter?

To be honest, i think that the papsts, panaflos and enermaxs must be so close in performance that the specific enviroment that you put them in would be the largest factor in determining which is best. Its also worth taking into account that different noises annoy different people, so one might find ...

Yeah, ill echo what crisspy said as well regarding noise caused by grills. I dont have any grills on any of my fans (they are all at 7 or 5V anyway, so no significant pain is caused by putting your finger in one). But if you were gonna use filter grills, it might be worth trying them on the inside o...

Yeah you would only put filter grills on the input. Their purpose is to try and reduce the amount of dust build up in your case. Putting them on the exhaust would just cut airflow unnecessarily.

If you wanted to do that , you could just make your duct to the front 5 1/4" bays and leave the fan as an exhaust fan? Would be the same as your suggestion i think. Then you would need a separate exhaust fan as well tho.

It is something i thought about doing, but dont really need to now

and why isn't there much talk about peltier cooling solution in this forum? they don't need fans do they? peltiers are just heat pumps (which also create heat), so as more heat needs more cooling and hence more noise, thats probably why people dont use them for quiet applications. I bought a 60W TE...

Hmmm... Peltiers are just gonna produce extra heat, so i doubt its gonna be the miracle solution Peltiers at first appear to be. From my time on overclocking forums it is general consensus that air cooled Peltiers are dubious to say the least. Most require water cooling to be effective. Also you wou...

Yes, then you meant radiation. But even still radiation isnt going to give anywhere near enough cooling unfortunately. I can prolly go find some equations, but it would be hard to work it out with all the variables. Also remember that your HD is still in a plastic box, which is a poor conductor anyw...

It think another question is will convection work in a vacuum? And that is definetely a no! Heat wont travel through a vacuum except by radiation, so i would think the HD would overheat very quickly unfortunately...

Sorry going a bit OT, but people keep calling the thermal sensor a thermal diode? Im no electronics whizz, but i thought a diode just allows current to flow one way not the other - hence it measuring temp is a little confusing :?

Is it just a misnomer that has crept in on the sly?

Yeah we will need to know what HS you are using. But if it can take an 80mm, then any 80mm fan should do. I have a papst 80mm NGML on my P4s Alpha 8942T.

Heat pipes certainly arent a gimmick, its just that this application of them is completely pointless, giving no benefit what so ever - hence making it a gimmick. In the case of the zm80 tho, the heatpipe is used to move the heat to the top of the card so convection cooling can work more efficiently....

Have these been mentioned before? Something similar has anyway... What i said then was that the point of heatpipes is to move the heat to somewhere else so you can use a larger heatsink. The heatsink they have there is smaller than others which dont use heatpipes... Might be interesting to see a com...

Eheim pumps are apparently the best for watercooling, and are supposed to be really quiet too as long as you decouple them from the case (on a rubber mousemat at the bottom of your case or something). Steer clear of Rio pumps, as i have heard lots of people say that they have failed on them. Danner ...

That'll be pretty quiet i would think (not silent but a lot quieter than a standard PC). After you get a barracuda the main problem will be the PSU. The fan is pretty quiet, but the problem is the turbulence inside the PSU. But, if you have quiet music or anything else on inthe background, your comp...

If the temp controlled one is normally gonna be off, then dont connnect it to a papst! They click like crazy when the voltage is below the startup voltage!

Not sure what you mean by question 2? It sounds like you want the motherboard to change the voltage? But arent you build a voltage controller?
