better (read: necessary) to have a 80mm Fan around it somewhere Probably. From CPUs ranked by noise (in http://www.silentpcreview.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=31&page=1) "Early P2 with less efficient core difficult to cool quietly, as power dissipation i...

Umh, first hand-on review in this MacWorld article, and ... One thing that did surprise me about the Mac mini was the noise level, both good and bad. Most of the time the machine is very quiet, basically silent; I expected more regular fan noise given the cramped quarters inside the box. On the othe...

As we're on silentpcreview, I think I'll point out that a P4 in this box will peak at 85W (around) while the G4 will be at 25W. It's also priced at 514 CHF here (no cpu/ram/...), while the mini mac is 699 CHF ...

This one is much better OTOH.

The zalmann is overkill for this poor little CPU. Almost any stock heatsink without the fan should be ok, given few airflow. I build such PC for my father, and it's enough for email, web, word & chess, altough a little bit slow to start programs. I tried one mpeg movie and it worked, but it was smal...

Keep in mind that apple designs are usually done with a specific user profile in mind. They're not generalists. If you do a general comparison, they'll fail. If you do a focused study, they shine. Now, if only they would focus on SPCR users ... If you get into how Apple does business,... well, ther...

spec , from what I found, max power used should be below 25.6W. Not such a challenge to silently cool. It is also nice to note that this CPU has lot of powersaving features as well. probably not a challenge to cool in a big enough case with a big enough heat sink and a big, slow fan moving air accr...

I would like to see a Shuttle MacMini killer with a PM. Why? Because they can, and the PM is so much faster. A PM Zen could have this size with a mini-ITX mobo (already exists) and laptop drives. Other advantage of PSU with external brick is the size of what goes inside the box. That's what I have in my HTPC and am very happy with it ;)

The brick is also the only part to heat, the DC-DC circuit doesn't (significantly).

Just a comment about "but warm air rises". I have difficulties remembering my lectures at school, but if I'm not that wrong, when you're using forced convection (read a fan), the natural convection effect is negligible. Of course, YMMV, especially with very low airflow setup, but this really sounds ...
