Wow, this thread has certainly exploded from the original 10 replies it had when I last checked it  Well, I finally decided on the S12 500. Why? Here's a couple of reasons. In less than a month, I will be upgrading to a SLI setup. Therefore, I want to have the PCIe connector which the 430w s...

Re: what fan is in this model?
Hello: It'll be interesting to learn what fan model is in the 430watt unit. The S12 500watt has a Yate Loon ball bearing 5-blade high speed unit -- but it actually pretty quiet, under normal use anyway. I could be wrong, but I faintly recall that Mike might have mentioned that the lower wattage S12...

also have to remember is that sound is energy. Law of conservation of energy forbids you from destroying that sound energy. However, it enables you to convert it to other forms of energy. In this case, that form of energy is thermal energy. In almost all forms of sound absorption materials, there is...

When trying to have a quiet system, it is far more effective to attack the chief problem rather than trying to soften the problem. In other words, check out the noise level of your psu, system fans, cpu fan, Northbridge fan, GPU Fan by stopping each with your finger pressing onto the central hub. If...

When I modified an old slot Pentium heatsink (those black heatsinks from years back) for use as South Bridge cooler, it was enough for me to "Kiss Grind" the surface down. I dunno how accurate Kiss Grinding is compared to lapping. The grinder has accuracy to 0.003". Is this something that you might ...

Most likely not. You are fine as long as you dont "kink" the IDE ribbon. Also, you probably should make sure the ribbon is long enough. I know standard 18" ribbons are not because the "slave" connector doesnt clear the height of the mobo. Its probably not a great idea to have that connector jamming ...

You will probably noticed the most dramatic change in your cooling (for the better) if somehow you can fit a 120mm fan as an exhaust for your case in the back. A 120mm fan in the front may not have as great of an effect because you will still be exhausting with a small fan. However, with the other w...

Yes and no; the only Zalman sinks that would measure up to SI-97 have to be the 7000s and 7700s (beating SI-97, of course); the 6X00 and lower models do not have the cooling capability of SI-97, and some models still weigh more than SI-97 to boot. -Ed Also, the Zalman 7700 for sure is totally not r...

If you are handy/know someone with a milling machine, just mill off the closed screw columns. Thats what i had done with my 2 yateloons and it came out real nice. I know prescott jokes are old, but there is no denying it, that prescott is a good source of your heat. As the above mentioned, Modifying your gpu with an Artic Silencer is an excellent idea. You might see temp drops of 5-10C depending on the case setup. I assume your case has all 80mm fans. Are you...

Depends on what kind of "quiet" you are looking for. Are you looking for Quieter than your GPU fan? Or are you looking for quiet = can't hear from 30cm away? It is probably no problem to get that 42db fan down to 32db lets say - kind of onehalf of the perceived noise. Can you get that fan below 22db...

the heat that the cpu heatsink and fan assembly get rid of, have to go somewhere. Generally there are 2 basic areas for that heat to go. The PSU and the Exhaust fan. If you have a PSU that has an underneath fan, it will have a part in exhausting your system's heat in addition to your exhaust fan. If...
