What's the SPCR record at the moment for low power consumption with a C2D CPU? Does anything approach the new Mini?
It's a disappointing upgrade given it hasn't been touched for almost 2 years. Imagine the applications these could be used for with a quad core

That's hot. My Q9550 with S1283 idles at 32/32/30/30, and when running at 100% rarely goes over 40 per core. Dumb question - but did you remove the plastic film from the bottom of the heatsink? When I applied thermal paste to mine, I applied it to the heatsink, and spread it out by finger (wrapped i...

It seems the WD20EADS a little slower than the 1TB Caviar Black, which is not that bad. However, still not a match for the similar-priced VelociRaptor (I know, I'm being mean here... lol), whose MINIMUM read speed is faster than the WD20EADS AVERAGE read speed. Well, that's exactly as expected... t...

I just read an email from state-side relatives who are "climate change deniers", pointing to record cold snaps being evidence against "global warming". Unfortunately their message is a little lost given that last week Melbourne had a record heatwave of 43C, 44C and 45C for three days straight (110F,...

I'm only folding because I have a quad core running as a server... and most of the time it's idle. So I have one VM running with two cores of SMP on it - that way I'm averaging ~50% CPU utilisation, and keeping the heat and power consumption down. After a few months I'm only at 48 work units complet...

It was the 64 bit version with 4GB RAM allocated. As I said, it was an install into a virtual machine, so no, I didn't apply it over the top of an existing installation. Looks like I was looking at the free space, not the space used - but it was still 15.4GB used for the install. I installed to a 32...

Do the cheap CF to IDE adapters suffer from stuttering issues? VelociRaptor or SSD?
SSDs appear to be coming down in price quicker than... well insert your dirty analogy of choice here. The Titan 128GB SSD has been announced with pricing of $300 USD - that's $2.35 per GB. A 300GB VelociRaptor currently costs about $0.77 USD per GB - so SSDs are only three times more expensive than ...

You need to use the correct Torx bit! They are not a Phillips head or Allen/Hex.
