What's the SPCR record at the moment for low power consumption with a C2D CPU? Does anything approach the new Mini?

It's a disappointing upgrade given it hasn't been touched for almost 2 years. Imagine the applications these could be used for with a quad core :)

That's hot. My Q9550 with S1283 idles at 32/32/30/30, and when running at 100% rarely goes over 40 per core. Dumb question - but did you remove the plastic film from the bottom of the heatsink? When I applied thermal paste to mine, I applied it to the heatsink, and spread it out by finger (wrapped i...

It seems the WD20EADS a little slower than the 1TB Caviar Black, which is not that bad. However, still not a match for the similar-priced VelociRaptor (I know, I'm being mean here... lol), whose MINIMUM read speed is faster than the WD20EADS AVERAGE read speed. Well, that's exactly as expected... t...

I just read an email from state-side relatives who are "climate change deniers", pointing to record cold snaps being evidence against "global warming". Unfortunately their message is a little lost given that last week Melbourne had a record heatwave of 43C, 44C and 45C for three days straight (110F,...

I'm only folding because I have a quad core running as a server... and most of the time it's idle. So I have one VM running with two cores of SMP on it - that way I'm averaging ~50% CPU utilisation, and keeping the heat and power consumption down. After a few months I'm only at 48 work units complet...

It was the 64 bit version with 4GB RAM allocated. As I said, it was an install into a virtual machine, so no, I didn't apply it over the top of an existing installation. Looks like I was looking at the free space, not the space used - but it was still 15.4GB used for the install. I installed to a 32...

My Q9550 only undervolts to 1.125V at 100% - anything less than that is prone to crashing. With SpeedStep it would idle at 1.08V - seeing as it's always running a folding VM with 2 cores in the background, I use less power than leaving voltage at "auto". It hosts a website so is on 24/7.

I installed W7B into a virtual machine - just fired it up, it used 16.9GB to install.

The WD GP drives support "start up in idle" mode - you do this with jumper pins (not that the drives come with a jumper bridge). Haven't tried it because mine are in an array and I'm not sure what effect on the array it would have.

You need to use the correct Torx bit! They are not a Phillips head or Allen/Hex.
