OK... So we're looking at a 160 GB SP1614N (luck of the draw b/w Nidec and JVC) or a 60 GB MP0603H. Both are costing me $120 Canadian, which I'm willing to pay. (BTW. Would the 60 GB be one-platter? Two-platter? One-and-a-half-platter? ;) ) The 2.5" is quieter than both JVC and Nidec 3.5"s. It also ...

A 2600+ might be a bit much to ask the PSU fan to cool just by itself unless you undervolt it seriously -- which probably means you have to underclock it too. But with some care, especially ensuring well-directed airflow from intake to PSU across the CPU HS, it could work fine without the PSU fan r...

Well yeah, it's an SFF, on my desk like every other decent SFF out there?

Plus, if my brain survived all the CRT exposure, I'm not too concerned.

Is 2.5" worth it in my situation?

Hello, I'm trying to make a decision between either of Toshiba MK4025GAS and Samsung MP0402H 40G, or a Samsung SP1614N. I'm making an SFF that will reside on my desk approximately two feet from my head. So far, the design calls for Seasonic SS-200SFD's (of Breadbox PC fame) fan to cool the CPU heats...

CD-ROM / DVD cooling?

Hey, in my new setup there will be just about no airflow whatsoever next to the 5.25" drive, and the air area around the drive itself will be pretty limited. (ie, cramped and not breezy.) Currently I'm putting an old CD drive in there, but I might upgrade to something better in the future. I'm fairl...

sorry, what I meant was, it would be better to have the disk contatly spinning, at idle, rather then turning off every few moments, which is annoying In some cases the automatic turn-off can be a lifesaver... I currently use an old Seagate Medallist and that thing has a whine like no tomorrow. I ha...

Re: Samsung SpinPoints' product numbers?

PATA - parallel ATA. This is the old interface with 39 pins or 40 pins in the oldest versions. SATA - serial ATA. This is the new interface that we are slowly transferring to. All new motherboards should have atleast two sata connectors already although you might sometimes find some old stock witho...

Re: Samsung SpinPoints' product numbers?

Obviously you haven't looked at the drive specs hard enough ;) Drive models ending in C have a SATA interface. The ones ending in N hava a PATA interface. Looks like for some reason Samsung's website does not list all variations of their drives. Since besides not looking hard enough I'm also cluele...

Samsung SpinPoints' product numbers?

Hey, I'm getting a 160 GB / 8 MB cache Samsung SpinPoint... What interests me is that while Samsung's website lists this drive as SP1614C, both of the stores I got quotes from called them SP1614N. The 2 MB cache version is called SP1604N and I'm wondering if that's just a typo on their part? Or mayb...
