Just to drive the point home about low power PSUs, I should point out that the power consumption of most consumer power supplies with no load applied is typically between 10~20W. This is something I've been looking at recently on the test bench. Even the newest revision of the S12 draws 14W with no...

Linus regarding your CPU, noticed you are running an Athlon XP which in my experience is actually quite inefficient at idle. I believe the halt state/disconnect is not properly implemented for all socket A Athlons, if you run a software utility like S2K Disconnect, this will dramatically lower idle ...

Measured Apparent Power draw at the wall outlet using a clamp meter (Voltage x Current). However all PSU are external AC/DC bricks and should have PF close enough to 1 that Watts dissipated should be quite close. ========================== ASUS Pundit P2-AE2 Barebone (Via K8M800) Sempron 3000+ (Idle...

Thanks for pointing this out. I upgraded my BIOS from 0601 to 0702 and the CPU and NB? (Temp3 in Speedfan) temps also dropped 8C!! Now my Opteron 144 is idling (0.8v 1.0Ghz) at a more reasonable 41C and under Prime95 (1.0v 1.8Ghz) 45C using an old Thermaltake SilentPipe heatsink and a 92mm fan insid...

It's hard to compare your Aria to mine temperature/noise-wise, but I'd guess mine is quieter, using fewer fans. I'm pretty certain your setup is quieter with the nice duct work (mine is not quiet enough to be kept on my desk). I like your v2 intake duct idea with the HD mount, do you think there is...

Glad to hear you fixed your problem. Yes I put in a 120mm fan in place of the original PSU. More details on my system here . With a 7800GT it doesn't come close to being a silent system, but it does make for a pretty quiet SFF thanks to the DC/DC PSU. My external AC/DC brick (bought used) does get v...

I found your post with your system details, very nice! I'm surprised you had trouble powering up a P4 2.8 with a 6200, my PW200M paired with an 150W AC/DC brick had no problems running an Opteron 144 (undervolted to 1.0v) with a 7800GT. Don't have any personal experience, but there is a review at SFFTech. The main cooling fan looks similar to the SD11G5 so probably warrants replacement if you need a very quiet system, plus the tiny PSU fans don't look easy to silence either (but you could always put in a DC/DC psu).

I'm confused. In the AMD A64 TDP Poll , I saw different TDPs with seemingly the same CPUs (look at the different TDPs reported for venice 3000+ E6 CPUs). Even if two chips have the exact same part number (ADA3000DAA4BP-Rev E3 Venice for example), their individual TcaseMax/TDP could be different. Th...

I have the PW200M DC/DC converter in an Aria case and didn't experience such problems, either with the 12v dc input hanging in free air or secured onto the PCI bracket. 50% humidity does sound quite dry though, plus carpeting, sounds like static electricity might be your problem. But as for touching...

help explain TDP and TcaseMax
I have to admit that I haven't paid much attention to TDP in the past, but now that AMD is programming the actual TDP of each individual chip makes it especially interesting for selecting the perfect CPU for a silent PC. Only reason I noticed was the X2 4800+ now has a closer power draw to the 3500+ Venice, which is what would be expected if we assume similar TDP means similar power draw at same clock/volts. There's no need to wait, it seems that dual core Opterons 165/170 are already shipping with 35.0W TDP rating. Of course there is no guarantee since the TDP is variable, but based on the postings at TCaseMax forums seems most of these chips are 35.0W. Although AM2 may not offer much in terms of silen...

1) Regarding thermals, there is no mention of CPU temps in the article. Is it safe to assume this is directly related to the CPU/system power consumption? (Noting that CPUs without the heat spreader - like the Turion probably cool better with their direct contact to the heatsink) If so, at what kin...
