I have the WD 160 GB PATA and there is no whine. This WD1600JB is just as quiet as my previous Spinpoint SP1614N with NIDEC motor. I edited my post as I didn't mean to include the 160 as having a whine. I only had the 250. I'm very tempted to try out the 160G in SATA but the darn specs on the WD si...

Ah ok, sorry I thought it was just about the noise at seek, never really knew much about what the differences between the JVC and nidec motors were. So does this noise annoy many people, I am seriously considering sending them back and swapping them for some other make, prob hitchi. know they are n...

No problem... Just another thing... Some HDDs come with a DDO driver (dynamic drive overlay). This is a TSR that loads onto sector two of your hard drive and it's used to bypass the BIOS and take care of LBA addressing. Avoid using this at all cost, it mess with the MBR and can be a real pai...

Thanks, I see add on SATA controllers that look like it will fix my problem. I'm taking the PATA back anyways because of the whine so I'll just move on with a SATA drive. I just got confused with why Windows was reporting the full size but it looks like I do currently have a problem if I started usi...

No, the BIOS is not the problem here... You need at least the Service Pack 1 installed to access more than 137GB in Windows XP. The initial ATAPI driver provided by Microsoft has its limitation, the new one supplied with the Service Pack 1 (and any subsequent service packs) contains a 48bit ATAPI d...

Have you updated your bios? Usually that will solve any of those problems. If windows recognized full capacityand can access it, what is the problem anyway? I was afraid to start installing stuff. Never had a BIOS report less than windows so I have no idea what problems will crop up like Disk Defra...

XP sees the 250G but the BIOS says 137; Is this a problem?
Put in a new PATA drive but the BIOS reports 137G. My motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA6CX but I could not find anything that said it would go over 137 or support 48 BIT LBA.
XP sees the 250G though.
So should I buy a controller or am I okay as is?

Hello: These drives are NOT quiet. Are you referring to their idle noise and/or their seek noise? Both, but to be honest I never got past the seek noise. I set up two of these in a RAID 0 array and it sounded like popcorn in a microwave (slight exaggeration). They also seemed to have more idle whin...

Hitachi 7K250 whine blows through SMARTDRIVE 2002C
The 250GB Hitachi has a high pitched whine. Its not real loud but right there in the headache frequency. Putting it inside a SMARTDRIVE did not help. Back to Best Buy it goes.

Hello & Welcome! Have you considered suspending the drive, or enclosing it? Is it the seeks, or the idle noise that is irksome? As for your question, I have only used one Samsung PATA, and it was just as quiet as all the eight SATA drives were. Samsungs are pretty quiet, but some folks have had uni...

Why is no one buying the Seagate SATA V drives
I see Seagate Vs, new OEM, still available for sale. How come no one is talking about these? Aren't the Seagate Vs suppose to be top stuff?
Are the Samsungs with NIDEC motor really any better than these? I'd go for one of these but its just too much of a pain to find one right now.

i got a 200gb serial ata seagate hd, and whenever i try to defrag it, it will freeze up in windows. I notice that most of my hds have "file system" errors, so i doubt that its that problem, other than that, the os and everything is fine. Its just when i want to defrag. Should I buy a SATA Seagate V or a 7200.7?
I want to set up two SATA drives in a RAID. Both drives will be in 2002C Smart drive enclosures. Most important is that I do not want hard drive whine. Right now I'm running a 120G Seagate IV PATA / 2002C and am pretty happy with it excpet my Mboard has SATA and I want to move to RAID. I don't hear ...

There were an initial run of 9700 Pro cards way in the beginning where an excessive amount of adhesive was injected between the chip packaging and the shim; only those cards have excessively high shims. Those were the same cards that were suffering overheation problems even with the stock cooler, a...

I thought it was obvious that you would not put paste on the shim. Of course you wouldn't. The paste goes on the GPU and only a thin amount. With the shim in place more paste on the GPU is required which is what I was saying. With some 9700 pros its not a good fit. I just got done doing this a few w...

As I said, even with a dry install, there's already a gap from the shim to the VGA Silencer; with the TIM in there, the gap gets even greater. The shim will not affect contact at all, except if you unevenly screw down the rearside bracket, in which case the shim can only help. The only way the shim...

I recommend the Passive PFC models. The radeon pros can make the active PSUs whine. This is the opposite of my experience with PSUs. It's the extra coils required for Passive PFC that makes some PSUs really susceptable to whining. Active PFC PSUs have hardly ever whined in any of my testing or nume...
