If the firewall is to provide protection to network elements beyond the server then it is best to run as a standalone machine. This helps prevent possible firewall tampering in the event that an application running on the server is exploited. It also means that if the server goes down, you don't los...

I have a Samsung 275T 27" LCD and my Siny G420S 19" Trinitron sits right next to it in daily use. They both have advantages. I like the screen space/resolution ratio on the LCD but oh if it only had the colour saturation, contrast and overall sharpness of the CRT. A 27" widescreen Trinitron type CRT...

Well, two feedback form submissions, 3 e-mails, one snail mail and three phone calls (with interdepartmental transfers) and I finally got an answer: "it's the one with the female connector" Still no part number/model number etc. But at least I can make an educated guess (about 80% probability) as to...

Tape often has a higher coercivity and retentivity than the magnetic coating sued in hard drives. As a result it takes a stronger magnetic feild to accidently alter it, and a longer time for magnetic decay to affect it, all other things being equal. The problem with long term storage of tape that is...

There are a few cases with vents in the bottom that would permit air intake. But to answer the original question; for my part I'm happy with my PC Power & Cooling supplies. They use an 80mm rear exhaust fan and pull air through the PSU from a series of openings in the PSU housing. My latest is mount...

I mis-remember the model number FM or FN 81 or 82 (and I always have trouble navigating their site) but Silverstone are supposed to make a quiet 80mm fan though I think it's only about 36 cfm. They also make a Suscool model that is supposed to be silent but I suspect moves considerably less air, alo...

All magnetic media gradually degrade. If you are comparing specs you want to look for the rententivity (magnetic retention) figures, and perhaps depending on the storage environment the coercivity (resistance to change from magnetic fields). Humididty will have little effect on the magnetic retentio...

It's a little tight but it removes the same way the front fan bracket in the upper chamber removes - ie pull firmly towards you until it slides clear in the support holes and then lift away towards the read of the case. Mine was quite a snug fit but a slow steady increase of tension and it came out ...

Asus frustrating to contact
I bought a new Asus motherboard the end of July. I decided I would like to evaluate the TPM features as it had a spot for an optional module. In doing some research it appears that there are two modules that may work on this board but as they have different names, and part numbers, and Asus have abs...

Each to their own taste, and expectations. It is not really fair to criticize in such a general fashion and entire OS family because one of it's non-mainstream siblings didn't meet your expectations. Many thousands (millions?) of people use various forms of Linux on a daily basis on their desktops. ...

I don't know this for sure (I've only bought retail copies), but I don't think that OEM offers *any* advantages other than cost. Regarding the various versions, the retail box offers extra flexibility for re-installation or upgrades, but you will have to decide if the extra cost is worth the added flexibility. FYI, the retail Ultimate box includes both 32 & 64-bit discs. Depends on the flexibility you want. The retail versio...
