Re: SFF silent build for e-mail etc.
What about an all-in-one? Doesn't get smaller footprint than that. My dad has a 3 yr old Dell one (Inspiron 24, IIRC) with decent specs. Not as quiet as I'd like (SPCR fanatic here), but definitely quiet enough for him. It actually has "HDMI in" too, so can be used with a different PC one day (I tol...
Re: CES 2019
Don't know what you need for resources/horsepower for the 3D modeling...but if all you need is a basic card, consider a used GTX 1050 2GB or GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. I'm pretty happy with the MSI GTX 1050 Ti Gaming X I got off of eBay for $100. Steve, is the noise on that 1050ti good? When I did a recent b...

Re: Quiet cooler for a Ryzen 2600
If you mean XFR2/PBO, I thought that was only on the x models? I might be confused... I recently bought a Ryzen 2400g and put a noctua NH-L12s on it. It got hotter than I liked during some loads, though I suspect something weird was going on with my boost clocks (I was getting all cores at max boost...

Re: iPad??? WTF, Are the Apple execs complete idiots?
For some reason this thread (from 2010!) popped into my head just now, so I'm necro-posting to bring it back on the radar for the lolz. It's hilarious how much vitriol people were posting here for a product that went on to become so wildly successful and iconic. I'm not a fanboy, but many of these c...

I got scared about Ironwolf 10GB upon hearing this video today, Huge Workflow Upgrade - 40TB RAID NAS! , not sure if a drive was defective but its noisy. I saw that yesterday too... though I wonder if any 3.5" drive would be quiet if there are four of them in a small case, and all hard-mounted as w...

Re: What to build? The world changed in 8 years....
I'm all for keeping a useful, working machine going... my main PC at home is approaching 9 years old! I just want to point out, in case you do decide to buy something new, that AMD is indeed competitive again, and has a lot of value at both low and high price points. An AMD Ryzen R3 2200g or R5 2400...

He's wrong, you're right. I would beg to differ. The efficiency drop off is extremely small with modern PSU's. the ravenbridge apu is attractive with 4 cores and gpu i am wondering will the 7nm die shrink allow for apu to go up to 8 cores since its 2x density i understand scaling isn't 100% perfect and then is it better to have 4 cores @ 7nm lower power or 8 cores @ 7nm and higher power I've read decent ana...

Re: You may not need as much wattage as you think.
I suppose compared to a 650W PSU, it would run a bit warmer with the fan coming on more often. Not necessarily. The efficiency dropoff at max load is small so the extra heat output (even if you were running at 500W+) would be only a Watt or two. With higher rated PSU's they will often up the fan ra...

Re: You may not need as much wattage as you think.
From reviews I've read so far, the 2700 X maxes out at around 220W It's a 105W TDP processor. So, either the reviews are talking about total system power or they've got an insane overclock/overvolt going on. I believe TDP is only for base clocks. The Ryzen X models have built in overclocking featur...

Interesting case! Have you tried contacting the company directly (website and/or twitter)? "No news" probably equals "bad news" but it's worth a shot to reach out and see what they say.
If it doesn't work out, they have a passive mini-itx cube that looks pretty interesting and is available now.

Re: Lowering fan noise by cutting away exhaust mesh ?
I get why you want to keep it in the cupboard, but you are just recirculating hot air and making the problem worse. I'm not familiar with that case, but users have found creative ways to softmount multiple drives in a case, with a lot of airspace between each drive, so that less airflow is needed to...

Re: AMD Ryzen APUs (Raven Ridge)
2200G is a great addition to the budget market. It allows Ryzen to be a part of entry-level PC's without a video card being needed. Compared to the i3-8100, the CPU capability is slightly less but the integrated graphics are somewhat better . At $100, 2200G is a very good deal. However, the 2400G i...

I sure miss the hard drive and heatsink testing. And no one else out there seems to test heatsinks with low airflow like MikeC do...

Surprised to not see any discussion here on the recent release of the R3 2200g and R5 2400g APUs. I'm eyeing the 2200g to replace my 8 year old rig that does double duty as main PC and HTPC... Re: Storage (In The Next 5 Years)
Personally, I'm most interested in the new HD tech coming soon, microwave (MAMR). They're saying like 40TB drives in a few years. I don't need that much, but my 3TB is getting full after a few years, so I wouldn't mind an affordable 20TB or whatever (still needs to be quiet, of course). Current SSD ...

If you're up for a little project, a Dell RM112 is like $30-40 on ebay, 235W Gold. Needs a different mobo connector (I soldered mine, but I think there are adapters available now). Then you need a way to mount it since it's not ATX. Mine has been running fine for 7 years...

I know MikeC said he recently moved houses and has had to reconstruct the anechoic chamber, among a million other things when moving to a new house. I'm hoping things pick up a bit here when he's more settled.

Would love to see some pics of your setup. I always put my 3.5" HD on the case floor. I never felt comfortable suspending drives, even though it is (or was) popular here for a long time.
