Search for a utility called I8kfangui, which allows you to control the fan on many Dell laptops. It's harder to control temps on Core Duo equipped laptops than P-M's because the former don't allow undervolting to the same extent.

Just echoing the previous poster's endorsement. I also have a AOpen XC Cube MZ855-II, mine with a 725 overclocked to 2.13 and an Radeon 9600. I am just replacing mine with a Cord Duo AOpen Mini PC 945D, and am having trouble parting with my MZ855-II.

As someone who has become enamored with smaller computers in the last few years, I'll reflect my experience. Although these little computers are very likable because of their small footprint, it's really hard to get them as quiet (silent for all practical purposes) as a larger PC. As a result, the t...

I have an AOpen 945-D, and it's a nice little system for occasional use. It's not quiet, and I think it would be hard to make quieter. I imagine the 965 series will be similar. An Intel Mini Mac is much quieter (although not silent), if you're looking for this kind of a system.

I don't know the answer to your questions, but I do own the SD11G5 that was in the SPCR review. I've run it so that a 750 idles at .70v using Notebook Hardware Control (and 1.05v under load). It could be that Mike didn't take the voltage all the way down at idle.

I've been running an SD11G5 for over a year (bought the white one that was used for the SPCR review)--just as a quiet PC not for the various media purposes you have in mind. It runs with a single fan that you can replace with a 92mm Nexus Real Silent and run undervolted. It will be close to silent t...

Don't know. I just use the on-board with the DVI output.

You might want to think about the AOpen i945GTm-VHL. They're very stable, no problem with 2 x 1GB and have the standard S478 mounting bracket. They're also available for about $120. I have three.

The AOpen i945GTm-VHL is easily available in the U.S. for less than $120 USD. I have three of them, two of which I run pretty much all day without problems (just got the 3rd yesterday). They use the standard S478 mounting bracket and have DVI output which, for me, makes them superior to the ASUS boa...

Newegg has been out of the N4L-VM socket 479 board for weeks. Definitely seems the board may be discontinued...seem to be running out of MoDT options even for the Socket M CPUs...... AOpen i945GTm-VHL is available in several places now for less than $120. I have two and they've been just great--tot...

Since it sounds like you're not planning to use a energy hungry video card, why not use a PSU with an external brick--surely you don't need 400w--and then you won't have to worry about getting that heat out of the case?

Fanless laptops are nice, real nice - but in my opinion a more practical solution would be a laptop that can run with the fan off under light to medium usage, then kick in if performance is needed. Trouble is, from what I've seen, most laptops have fans that kick in much too early, and are a little...

About as quiet as they get in a 3.5" hard drive. Take both drives for $40 shipped (to lower forty eight). Or make me an offer for either separately if you only want one.

My 300W has only a single fan, but it may be that the design has changed. As I said in my earlier post, it was a lot quieter than the 240, although not quiet enough. I switched to a PICO and, of course, it's silent.

Very nicely done. One limitation of the Yonah chips is that Intel has made it impossible to undervolt below about .95v. I wonder what idle wattage you'd get with Dothan's which readily undervolt to .70 with a 6x multiplier. (I currently have three desktop systems that do so--two with 400MHz FSB and ...
