Welcome to spcr. I'm from Perth, and the first tip I'd give any Australian is PC case gear if you haven't found it already. They stock a range of parts (heatsinks and fans) commonly recommended on spcr at reasonable prices, and ship Australia wide. http://www.pccasegear.com.au For cases and PSUs, MS...

Sorry MFE, I don't know about AAM or how it is implemented.

What tool are you using to query / set the AAM properties outside of the NDAS? Maybe there is another tool which can help you (from WD perhaps)? Might be worth a try writing an email to WD to see if they have any suggestions too.

Wow, interesting first post! Sorry, I don't have a definite solution for you. My only thought is replacing the firmware in the NDAS. Is there any open source firmware for it? Or if you are really ambitious, you could try reverse engineering it with an ARM disassembler (most of these things use ARM C...

Thanks for the info deadrabbit. The snapshots definitely sound like an interesting feature to me. I might install them both as VMs and have a play.

Unfortunately I don't have access to newegg (not in the states), but I've got an old mobo + Celeron and a mini tower case which should be up to the job.

Yes you can. You should be able to bridge or route between any pair of network interfaces on your machine, whether they are onboard, installed in a PCI slot, connected by USB, or any other way. They don't need to be the same type of interface either. You could use an 802.11b wireless interface and a...

Apart from the hard disk drives, and assuming you use quiet fans spinning at low speed, the machine should be quiet (not silent). Add in the 7 or 8 disks, however, and you can forget about quiet. I don't know how many of them you expect to be running at any given time, but the noise of 8 7200RPM 3.5...

OK, so a little googling helped me find an answer. This excellent whitepaper on industrial computers provides the formula: CFM = 3.16 x Watts / allowed temp rise deg F However, it goes on to explain that the impedance of the chassis to the fan must be factored in when selecting the number of fans. Rule of thumb for calculating total airflow requirements?

I'm wondering: given a known power usage (in Watts), is there some way to estimate the required airflow (in CFM)? This way, it would be possible to estimate or measure the total power consumption of a given set of components, and estimate how many fans at what speed would be required to cool a syste...

Welcome to SPCR! Stock Intel heatsink/fan combos aren't loud at idle, but an aftermarket cooler plus fan will certainly be quieter, especially at load. You could always start with stock and see how it goes for you, and replace later if need be. Assuming you use a quiet fan for your case exhaust, it ...

I don't know what will happen if your components decide to draw more power than the power supply can handle, but if it was me I'd go for a safety margin. I can't comment on the VX450 or Earthwatt 500 directly, but I was blown away by the quietness of my Seasonic 430W, which according to this site is in the same ballpark for noise (I wanted the VX450 but availability here in West Aus was limited)....

I'd put it all together using a standard power supply with ample capacity, max out the load on all components, and measure the total power draw at the socket.
