As for memory? 2Gb is plenty. 32-bit XP can't use 4 gigs, so it would be a waste of money. Buy the cheapest value memory available, performance gains from memory are negliable. You really gain nothing unless you were planning for high overclocks. From my experience high performance memory also tend...

It turns itself off most of the time. Nothing like the old XPs. QFT Also, current AMD coolers are quieter than the Intel ones. Oddly enough, a decent Antec case+PSU and a stock A64 X2 cooler ends up quieter than many current big vendor boxes. I believe you'll be quite pleased with stock parts, thes...

1. Why Ballistix? 2. Where are the HDDs going to be? Seems to me, the first step is to figure out how far away you can stash them; as, having three of them, they will present the most trouble to you. I'm not married to ballistix they seem to be recommended a lot. What's your choice? 2x2GB sticks of...

For something easy to go in, my recommendation is still one of Thermalright's. The Ultra 120 Extreme will be easier to mount than the SI-128 SE, but while they may look intimidating, just have a little patience and they'll go on like clockwork. The Katana doesn't get the super cool temps other heats...

There is a top. It's plywood. The top will be the ducts/chambers. Scheduling has kept my neighbor and I from being able to get together and do the actual set of drawers as a piece of furniture. Right now, covering it isn't feasible, because I need the optical drive hooked up (I can't get Windows to ...

You can't do anything about the multiple seconds Firefox takes to load, unless you're willing to build it yourself, static (IMO, bad idea). It' has to do with how Firefox is designed. My E6750 starts it up only slightly faster than the Athlon XP before it. many apps will be the same way. Your best b...

I've now got a 800 RPM model as my CPU fan (two open windows in the room will have to do case cooling!), and...wow. This fan may be less than ideal not being a PWM fan, but it beats the Nexus silly at 12 volts. At three feet, ambient noises, like the wind in the trees, totally drown it out after abo...

The PCI bus will have plenty of room, unless he's moving large HD movies over GbE. A hardware controller isn't a bad idea, but using PCI is not a problem. You can get in excess of 100MB/s over PCI, and 8+MB/s over a 100Mb/s LAN with a switch (IE, not a hub). An old PIII with a new drive controller a...

1. Guinea pig, pretty much. Welcome to the club. I'm waiting for mine to be shipped out now. 2. Probably. Anandtech's review did it without effort, oddly enough. If you count ducting from an intake/to and exhaust, I can't imagine it would perform poorly. Edit : ducting can do miracles, even when not...

hmm ok... well i was going to use one of these 80mm fans in my psu but thats not gonna happen if they use a sleeve bearing. How are the artic cooling fans? to they have motor / bearing noise? Again, the 120mm ones are all I can say for (they're ADDA, IIRC)...there is some bearing noise, but not bad...

well soem google research has shown that the bushings i saw were actual sleeve bearings, they are one in the same. Thus the 80's and 120s have the correct "bearing" the 90mm is dual ball bearing and has horrible bearing noise... i think ima just return them all... i need these fans to last a LONG t...

Hello, The 800RPM Scythe Slip Stream (SSS?) starts fine a 5v -- and it is very slightly slower/quieter/less air than the SSS 500RPM at 12v. It blows more air at 12v than a GlobalWin NCB does at 5v; though it is also a bit noisier, too. (The GW NCB has the lousy "parallel" struts, btw...and it makes...

Ninja or SI-128 SE?
I have just over 150mm in height. Technically I could actually fit the Ultra 120 Extreme, but it doesn't fit my needs except generally liking Thermalright :). But, that gives me plenty of room for the Ninja or SI-128 SE. Ninja: -requires TR bolt-through kit -does not cool mobo parts +can probably be...

Looks good. I guess when I upgrade, I'll get a little assortment of fans, and see how well they do. If these will report tach around 5-7v, that'd be wonderful. About the only bad thing appears to be the bearings. It seems to me that fluid bearings would be ideal. But, they would have been more expen...

Standard, yes, but not "good." I made one very similar, and there are a few things you can do better. In other words, don't make the similar mistakes to mine! :) 1. The PSU should NOT exhaust from the motherboard space. It should exhaust from its own area. Try putting it below the motherboard, or if...

I have seen heatsinks with ruffled fins, jagged edges, and some with holes (TR's newer ones use holes). So, some ideas: 0. Holes in the fins work. It makes sense, and TR has a few coolers with them. These coolers perform well in quiet conditions. 1. It has to be done just right, or it could cause it...

Major vendors like to do their thing, only supporting standards when they must. Since people wanting decent fan control are such a small part of the market, no, We don't get standards. We get the hope of a decent BIOS, or Speedfan, or pwmconfig working for our board, and then the hope that the fans ...

Assuming undervolting, and that it's an old Japanese one, most new fans will be on par. Nexus are better (unless mounted horizontally) in terms of noise, but not by much. However, the FDB fans age much better. The main advantage with several newer fans is that they will happily run at lower RPMs, wh...
