Most motherboards are not configured to allow fan speed changes via SpeedFan. The only ones that I know of are Shuttle XPC (not ATI chipset) and Biostar Ideq. Post your motherboard and others may know if yours is compatible.

I've got 3 of the Zalman 7000al/cu coolers and they're excellent. They do, however, overhang the edge of my Intel cpu mobos by about 1/2". Also, they're easily damaged if you drop your psu on them. :)

Cooling P4 2.8E Folder - Aria Case!

Got a 2.8E cpu last week (a newegg returned item) and put in service on an ASUS P4P800-VM mobo - Intel 865 chipset, matx. At first, I tried an Artic Cooling 4TC hsf and got 70C and sometimes a little more while folding 2 wu's at a time using HT. Actually, this was on another matx board, but, it real...

-forceasm isn't precisely an "optimization" on Intel boxes since they will use "assembly language optimizations" by default. However, after encountering "simulation instability," the client may revert to using "standard loops". -forceasm ensures that "Assembly optimizations" are always used. David ...

Had a similar deal with running 2-2-2 memory with "Auto" memory settings in the bios. Changed to 2.5-3-3 and this cured my stability problems on an Intel 865 chipset board which was ditching wu's and failing Prime95.

I have a P4 and I'm using the -advmethods flag as well as the -forceasm flag. Should I be using the last one? I knocked out the Gromac last night. I now have a Double Gromac. It's going to take about the same amount of time as the Gromac. 100 steps @ about 8.5 minutes per step. I'm running at 1.5gh...

Copper, As Neil mentioned, use the -forcesse flag on amd folders (this is a must) and use -advmethods on both intel and amd to minimize Tinkeritis. Intel cpu's suck at folding Tinkers and while the 238 point Tinkers are ok as far as production, the others generally are awful or nearly so. Have fun f...

Queued Tinkers caused a spike in production An unusual number of DGromacs, which are worth 3x other work units on P4's, and 2x on some other processors A spate of "high value" Tinkers Ain't no doubt about it. :) There were a bunch of the 249 point Tinkers going around then; pretty rare now - these ...

I was getting about 1,100 to 1,200 ppd before and now about 1,900 to 2,000 ppd. So, my increase is more percentage-wise. It sure ain't double. I did add another box a couple of weeks ago, but, it's only 100 ppd, or so. Factoring that out, I'm gonna say about 60% increase (1,100 to 1,800 ppd.)

Same deal here with stability problems on 4 of my folders. 2 of them are open air boards and the passive nb heatsink would get nearly hot enough to burn my fingers (one was locking up and the other was aborting units.) 658 ppw - 2700+ T'bred

585 ppw - 2500+ Barton

No p1110's here.

(actually the p638's are generally not too bad on my AMD's)

Any of the wrap-around passive vga coolers will almost for sure interfere with the pci slot. Anyway, even if you could get a pci card in the slot, it would block the airflow to the "inside" of the vga cooler. The 9600 xt has holes for mounting the fan. Your best bet might be to try one of the Vantec...

Definitly try switching work units between cpu's of different type though, this could net a decent gain.
Only took a few secs, once I got a kybrd/video/mouse connected to the subject folders. 8)

BTW, my 2000+ Paly folds p638 1 minute faster per frame that the 3.0C. :o

Not to worry, Pete, we've all been there. My suggestion is to do the following:

1. Plug "lappie" into network.

2. Turn computer on.

3. Start folding.

4. Relax.

If there is a wu in the queue, it will transmit itself, soon. If not, well, either way, nothing needs to be done. :)

Pete, Look in fahlog-prev.txt, in your folding directory. The "current" text file spills over to the -prev.tx file when it fills up, so to speak. It should show if you finished the old wu and what happened to it. I'm kinda curious how it started on a new wu if the computer was disconnected from the ...

Standard procedure on an XPC is to cut the exhaust grill out. Perhaps a better choice in exhaust fans would be a Panaflo 80 mm M fan. An ATI 9200 video card seems to me to run cooler than the Nvidia 5200 chip. The seek noise on a Maxtor 250 drive may be a bit much, although perhaps it can be adjuste...
