Just a thought, why not have the PC automatically go on suspend when you're not using it? That's going to save you more money than building a new PC idling 24/7.

Silverstone NT07-AM2. Whether it's enough to cool that CPU at low noise levels is a different matter, though.

I expected AMD to dominate those charts. I'm pretty amazed at how well hyper-threaded Nehalems are holding up. On a budget, thoug...

Do you already own the E7400? If not, then I suggest considering an LGA-1156 based build with H55/H57 motherboard and Core i3-530 or AM3 based on 780G/785G/880G motherboard and Phenom II X2 550.

i can't imagine buying into the crippled 1156 platform, when amd offers better bang for the buck, as in, 6-core Phenom II X6 1090T for about the same price as the four-core i7-860(??) :D " The 1090T can easily trump the Core i7 860 and the 1055T can do even better against the Core i5 750 ...

Just make sure your laptop adapter is 12V. So far, all the laptop adapters I've had are 19V. Not really much of a gamer unless you count PSX and PS2 emulation, and for those, CPU is king so a Core i-series is the obvious choice. For PC games, Nvidia's graphics drivers are much better than Intel. I'm...

Motherboard: Gigabyte versus Asus -- also is there any meaningful difference between H55 and H57?? Either brand is decent, although I do have a preference for Gigabyte. As for H55 vs H57 - RAID. The goop, even the cheap stuff will do and a lot of cooler manufacturers include it in their package.

Re: Which one: Zotac H55-Itx or Zotac GF-9300?

Now the question is, should I buy a PicoPSU or can I do without it? What about the processor cooler? You won't be able to fit tall coolers in the case unless you replace the included power supply with a PicoPSU. If you use the included PSU, you'd actually want to replace the cooler with a shorter S...

Both LGA-1156 and LGA-1366 are dead-end anyway. I think pretty much the only upgrade that would be available for LGA-1366 is Gulftown and I have a feeling by the time you'd need Gulftown, you can buy a faster Bulldozer or Sandy Bridge for cheaper (or whatever's new).

Frankly, I think you'd be better off replacing the HD 3850 with the lower power one you already have. I'm getting 35W idle on my Celeron E3300 but that's with iGPU (GF9300) and 2.5" 5400RPM HDD. Belkin Conserve

Just read the blurb on Engadget. I must say, the Insight with the display being separate from the base, this is looking to be a much more convenient alternative to the Kill-A-Watt. Of course, it would've been nicer if they had allowed interfacing with a computer for extended monitoring/trending.

The Cooler Master Hyper TX3 uses push pins. Using it to cool a Core i7-860 at stock and it seems to work well enough. During OCCT:Linpack, temps maxed out at 70C, iirc. Unfortunately, I didn't really take note of ambient temps, but it was fairly warm yesterday (Los Angeles, CA). Maybe around 80F?

Can't really agree with that. 30W idle with a huge chunk of the PSU's power wasted as inefficiency is theoretically just not possible ... especially if the PSU is 750W like that used by Tom's. As for your case, if you're really getting 30W, then your PSU must be very efficient even at 10% load. Is ...
