Don't these big projects send out each work unit to a couple of different computers? I certainly got the impression that that was how SETI@Home worked... That would obviously show up any errors - unless of course the two computers both made exactly the same errors. I think that's how it's done - not...

Is it just me... or are the fins on the sink going the 'obviously' wrong way, i.e horizontal not vertical?
I think it could be installed in either orientation, but for sure, I'd prefer to have the fins vertically as well. :)

I wonder if Apple's come up with something unusually quiet. The clear, moulded airflow insert is definitely standard on the G5. Did the one in the store also have a totally clear side panel - maybe something like this? http://www.macskinz.com/cgi-bin/product_2.cgi?page=g5 I'm sure I'd take one of th...

Panaflo 24v M1A questions

I'm running my 24v M1A at the standard 12v, and I'm not entirely happy with the noise from it. Has anyone tried this fan at anything lower? i) What's the minimum reliable start voltage, and ii) how much quieter is it at this voltage than at 12v? Thanks.

I think all of that advice is excellent; in addition, you'd be well rewarded for elastic-suspending that DiamondMax Plus 9. I have the same drive, and it made a significant difference for me - even before I'd silenced the rest of the system. Also, use AMSET to change to 'quiet' seeks.

Well, the PSU fan - an 80mm Panaflo L1A - is the sole extractor in my system (schematic here ). Fresh air is pulled in through a duct by the CPU heatsink fan; it then rises from the heatsink, into the PSU and away. There's a slow fan stirring the air near the HDD, to keep it close to case ambient, b...

Are you sure you mean PSU? It sounds like you just want to add a standard exhaust fan to the case.

Mats, there's no power button. There are six non-standard keys/buttons:

- Media
- Play/Pause
- Mute
- Favourites
- E-Mail
- WWW

I just use Ctrl-Alt-Q to run a shortcut to "shutdown -s -t 0" - works nicely in XP.

Could you post a few pics of the areas you're talking about? Would probably help people to help you - and frankly I'm intrigued about what the internal cooling apparatus of a Mac looks like :-)

I just wish the picture on safe operating temperatures was slightly clearer. The manufacturers could do us a big favour by getting explicit about projected lifespan over the whole temperature range.
