Re: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD
There's a bit more to it than that (see the Intel link above). It's easier for those like the 320 designers who don't need to compete very hard on cost and performance but otherwise, there's a balance to strike: some writes consume a lot more power than others ("amplification") so it would be wastef...

Re: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD
As much as I like UPS', I have to agree - the parts should be ready for the worst-case scenario if at all possible. And with SSDs, it's apparently really simple, or would be. I don't know about "really simple" but I agree it would be more practical to safeguard the average client SSD against blacko...

Re: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD
There are a small row of capacitors which should flush all data in transit to the NAND in the event of a power loss, and as the M500 doesn't have a large DRAM cache to flush either, those caps should suffice. I don't know how effective those (Intel, Micron, whatever) strategies are, I merely point ...

Re: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD
It's not a problem that's supposed to happen all that frequently unless the drive is used intensively. Which is why people use contrived tests to demonstrate the problem.
And it's not only a problem with SSDs. Hard-drive caches have long been a problem (with well-known solutions of course).

I am considering adding a UPS Unless the reliability of your electricity supply is remarkable for a home environment and considering that you're spending 1000 euros on a pico-powered server... yes, it would be prudent to consider it! It would also be prudent to pick a very good brick that can deliv...

Re: Why I can't trust other websites noise evaluations
I seem to have annoyed some people by posting my opinion of Anandtech a while back. I wouldn't trust them for anything. Obviously I'd trust their noise evaluations a lot less than most of their stuff. Not because of the defensive opinionating of a single reviewer but because they obviously did not h...

I didn't even realize there were versions with fans around at first. Do tell if it would be cheaper (and cheap enough for your purposes) for you to buy the fanless version from a private individual overseas than purchasing it from some shop. There's less VAT here than in the EU. The local price has ...

I no longer trust the cheap drives of any maker, but for Seagate to advertise 2400 power on hours (all of 100 days) I run away from such hard drives. Dial down the FUD! You've looked at the specs of a desktop drive. All that it means is that they expect them to be used for that many hours per year....

Re: Keep i3 Haswell 35W TDP fanless
It's probably not a great idea but if you really want to do that, you'd better underclock. And you might as well buy a much cheaper CPU. The official TDP rating is basically irrelevant. Underclock any modern Intel and it'll run cool. Or you might simply buy a cheap board which comes with a factory-u...

I'm a bit late but... Linux software RAID works well. For most applications, it's less trouble than hardware RAID. And you'll have little use for a SSD unless you want very fast (re)boots. You can have several RAID partitions organized differently on the same drives by the way. RAID1 is the way to g...

Re: Switch to Intel for heat reasons?
I don't think it's so much bad design as AMD trying to push the limits of their technology. Intel has much better tech, a whole lot more money and so forth. It's not equal competition as far as the CPU part of the chips is concerned (I'm not talking about the integrated graphics). Intel cripples mos...

What Intel is a good value in performance and heat levels, without being the most expensive they sell? Intel runs cooler *when doing the same work*.
Of course Intel sells CPUs which run hot. But they do more work than hot AMDs.
Odds are, you have little or no use for an i7.

Re: Windows XP EOL (8 April 2014), budget Win7 migration ide
While I anticipated Windows XP's EOL, I did not expect Microsoft's " Security Essentials will not get updates on XP " nonsense. I agree, that is a poor reason to upgrade. It seems the actual reason in a professional environment tends to be: I don't want to be blamed for any future problems due to u...

Re: Initial power draw picoPSU concern
Intel's TDP values are marketing-driven and can not generally be used to determine how much a particular CPU model will consume. In many cases, you need to stress the CPU's integrated graphics to get it to consume as much as it can. Some types of loads can also cause more power consumption than othe...

Re: Initial power draw picoPSU concern
Your numbers are off. The drives will probably draw at least twice that when spinning up. On the other hand, there's no way the CPU will draw close to 50W and I doubt the board will draw that much either. So if you simply add the watts, it looks like you ought to be OK. I haven't looked at the detai...

Re: remaining sound sources HDDs and PSU
What you're missing is how efficient Intel parts have become. ~250G SSDs aren't all that expensive nowadays, especially if you look at auction sites. But if that's still too expensive, there are HDs which make very little noise (see SPCR reviews). You could buy a new mobo and CPU with that kind of m...

I'll answer the question in bold, not the title. Like you said, formulation issues (temporary data and cached data are different things). Short answer: In general, no it shouldn't. However you should test this kind of thing if you really care. Doesn't your drive have a usage counter you can check wi...

DS47? 2xRS232 (and not just 1 + 1 header) is unusual. With very specific requirements, you sometime have to have to pay through the nose. Maybe ask Logicsupply. This is their kind of thing. Re: How important are heatsinks on motherboards?
Constant high temps is not the only concern. Temp swings are as well. Intel non Z motherboards barely have any heatsinks, if any, and they do fine for years, if you are not introducing more voltage i dont think you should have much of an issue as long as you case has some airflow. Their documentatio...

No beeps? Because there's no speaker or because your mobo/CPU is failing to beep? I wouldn't rule out RAM failure if you have no speaker connected. Memtest wouldn't have been able to test all the RAM anyway. It doesn't cost anything to use try both of your sticks alone. It also doesn't hurt to hit t...

I read that this processor (and the whole i3 series) can't be underclocked / undervolted. Is it true? You can always underclock. Undervolting happens automatically with modern CPUs and I wouldn't recommend tweaking with that even if you can. None of that would make any difference to the idle noise ...

Don't look for Bay Trail. The server chips are called Avoton. Both types are also called Silvermont, along with other stuff.

The previous generation of server chips might also be of interest. It's called Centerton.
