Re: Question about USB to SATA adapters
Newegg.com (and .ca) sells both 2.0 and 3.0 versions between $10 and $15. Most negative feedback just complains that they don't work with 3.5 inch drives. What exactly are you looking at? (link please) There is no way for a disk controller to even know if a drive is 2.5" vs 3.5". It's not even like...

Re: Question about USB to SATA adapters
Are you completely out of internal SATA ports? If you must go this route I'd suggest using the USB adapter for your optical drive if you have one. Unless the adapter is USB3 then even 2.5 drives will be speed limited by USB. I'm not sure why you say a SATA controller is way more expensive. You can ...

Question about USB to SATA adapters
I want to use one of these internally to drive a front panel 2.5" dock because SATA controllers with good reviews are much more expensive. But since I won't have a drive inserted each time the machine boots, would the BIOS, Windows, or Ubuntu give any error messages or warnings when they detect the ...

Re: DH61AG versus more orthodox board
I didn't see a power cord included on Intel's site for that board, nor did I find any images of the inside of your machine. But I did see that unless that motherboard has an unusual rear panel arrangement and is installed upsidedown, any cooler you get will have to be 1U. Unless you get a board with...

Re: Upgrading, which ITX board should I get?
Does anyone know how the graphics processors compare between these two boards? Or how the NVIDIA GeForce 9300 graphics processor compares with the Sandy Bridge graphics processors, or any other processors? I need to do some more digging, but as a rough estimate: The latest hierarchy chart at Tom's ...

Upgrading, which ITX board should I get?
My goal is to upgrade my backup system to run Ubuntu and Windows 7/8 without lag for the next few years. Two particular boards seem perfect for the job, the Zotac GeForce 9300-ITX would allow me to use existing parts to make an inexpensive, dual-core 2.8GHz system with a large downblowing cooler to ...

Re: Lian Li PC-C50, "passive" tower cooler, or top-down?
I'm quite pleased with the performance of Scythe's Rasetsu. (top-down)
Not real happy with the stock fan's lowest speed range, ( their SY1225SL12LM-P model is much better suited for silence) but I sit right next to my tower so it may not be an issue in a HTPC.

Re: tower cooler less then 140mm tall vs top fan coolers
I'd go for the Grand Cross, because there's a good chance a pair of slim (10mm) fans can be rigged to the bottom of the fins for push-pull. Alternatively, the Prolimatech Genesis is both a tower and top-down cooler with excellent cooling performance. With some careful bending, the 'tower' part can l...

Re: How silent are 3600 RPM microdrives?
I have a 4 GB one that I use occasionally in my camera. You can hear it faintly if you are holding the camera and pay attention. It's very slow though, much slower than even generic CF cards of similar size. I only use it as a last resort because of that. Unless your server almost never uses the dr...

How silent are 3600 RPM microdrives?
I saw that a 6GB version has come available on Newegg for a heck of a good price, and I'd like to retire the ancient IDE boot drive in my backup server in favor of a quieter model. Would this be inaudible if suspended (or placed in a vertical adapter) in an old steel case? What about performance, th...

Re: Silenced vintage/old/retro PC builds
(Why aren't things built to last like that anymore? I doubt any modern hardware will work in 30 years, but the 80s comps in museums still fire right up) I still have my Commodore Amiga 600 - still perfectly operational, even though the mouse is almost dead. My first PC however, a Celeron 366MHz die...

Old/vintage/retro PC eh? Okay, how about the FIRST 'Personal Computer', The IBM 5150? DSCF0003.JPG Originally I just swapped its all-hub cooling fan with a Scythe Slip-Stream. Re: noisy motherboard
I got this too when I started building my own silent machines. Usually it was related to the processor's power management circuitry. Is this 'somewhere' close to your CPU? Try disabling SpeedStep, that will make your CPU constantly run at full speed rather than underclocking itself during idle times...

Re: heatpipes questions
Anyway i have some questions left: - is it necessary to replace heatpipes after many years of use? - can they be bended with regular pliers? - why did you clean them with alcohol before installation? No, heatpipes are sealed systems and made of corrosion-resistant materials. By the time a enough co...

Does FX run cooler than Phenom II when overclocked?
I need to coax more speed from my CPU, which has a locked multiplier. I don't know whether I should stick with the Phenom II line for the job or if an FX CPU will run cooler when overclocked enough to give the performance I seek. The main problem is that no reviews I've found modify clock rates to g...

I see that adding their cheapest reservoir brings the price close to a modded Eheim pump with one built in. Suggest a quiet pump?
I'm considering adding a small loop for my comp's Christmas gift this year to assist in overclocking my CPU. Alright, I have another question.
I'm getting mixed impressions about suspension, will a tight sandwich system like the NoVibes affect seek noise if it's plainly audible while the drive is lying on a pillow?

Internal enclosure suggestions wanted.
I'm using a pair of 2.5" Hitachi HTS543232A7A384 drives, they have low vibration and idle noise, but their seek noise is annoying. To this end I'm looking for a product that will absorb the airborne noise and hopefully cost less than $30. (US) A few solutions have come up in my searches, but real-wo...

In my experience, dual monitor setups with integrated graphics only suffer when running a 3D application. Playing a DVD, using an office suite, or browsing the web will run just fine. Even all three at once shouldn't hit 100 percent. If you plan to play games or run a 3D rendering program, then you'...

Re: Is there a mATX AM3(+) board with 3 or more PWM headers?
As an alternative you can use Akasa PWM Splitter - Smart Fan Cable (AK-CB002) you can control 3 fans with a single mobo 4pin pwn connector, all fans will have the same rpm as the mobo sets for that single PWM connector, power should be drawn from the PSU 4pin molex, its a cheap way in case you like...

Is there a mATX AM3(+) board with 3 or more PWM headers?
Hi. As topic says, I'm looking for a smaller board with plenty of fan control.
Most I've been able to find is 2 PWM headers. I'd really like to avoid a 5.25 bay controller if I can, thanks.
