Re: Bay-trail motherboards
Though these temperatures are higher than they could be considering the load, I wouldn't be concerned about such temps either. But you need to read the relevant mobo documentation (if there even is one!) to know for sure what temps are safe. The CPU temperature isn't the issue. And as long as you ha...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
As far as I can tell, these boards were designed to run in an open case. A heatpipe case would be useless in an environment with reasonable temperatures and no liquid spills or other reasons to rule out an open case. If you run them in a closed case, I'd be concerned about other parts than the CPU. ...

Re: Building sff PC
With a 1037U board (BSD should have drivers for that I assume), you may be able get everything under $200 by cutting corners.
But I think spending a bit more would indeed be advisable unless you are willing to buy used parts.

Re: Replacing my server/NAS with something lower power
I've bought two Microservers. FYI, the second one has significantly higher power consumption according to my UPS. So yeah, I suspect the first Microservers had more efficient power supplys. MoJo, waking up a server from standby with WoL is fast as well. If you don't mind waiting for the drives to sp...

Re: Building sff PC
1. I want my PC to be as small as possible. There are smaller cases than the cheap Apex which come with a power supply. Unfortunately if you want no noise and and unless you can get a good deal on the used market, so far as I know they're either more expensive (ISK110 for instance) or unsuitable fo...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
The GPU is very small part of the SoC, so I doubt it can add significant part of heat. I finally installed Windows on my ASRock J1800 board and there's a difference of 14C between the CPU temperatures when you run Furmark on top of Prime95. Considering the temperatures I'm talking about, that's not...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
I don't know why you'd want all that but the C60M1I ought not to be too expensive. The fanless Zacates such as the old Zotac used to be more expensive. Not that you should consider any of these boards. They're only an illustration of how difficult it is to cool AMDs passively. If you want more perfo...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
If you don't put a large heatsink on it, it will heat up quite a bit not only with gaming but with any load. If you're going to underclock to prevent that, you might as well buy something less powerful. There are fanless AMD boards with factory-underclocked CPUs, you know. These are mobile parts to ...

ASRock J1800/J1900 boards
I finally got around to trying out one the ASRock boards. I usually don't care about which RAM slot I'm using but I noticed the system only seems to boot when I put the RAM in the slot that lies in the best path for the convective airflow. I've got no video/KB connected so possibly it's something I ...

What's a "bad website"? If you visit sites such as SPCR, you are at risk. Google phpBB vulns or something. No doubt there are more dangerous sites (more popular forums for instance), but are you confident you know enough to tell what's safe from what's not? Security updates are designed to prevent p...

Re: i still use windows xp on the desktop
Some OS security updates are more important than a firewall (assuming the computer is NAT'ed, as most are), AVs and so forth. The effectiveness of firewalls, AVs and so forth is generally overrated. Application security updates are much more important. So whatever you do, on XP the most important th...

Re: Build Advice Again - Parental Computers
The recommended specs ask for 3.6 GHz, in fact, which is kinda hard to find these days. So I can't skimp on the CPU in Dad's computer. These specs are nonsense. Ghz doesn't mean much. A mainstream modern CPU with half the GHz would be much faster at most tasks than one of these old P4s. If t...

Re: Build Advice, Please
I'm mostly interested in preventing damage to my computer. I save things constantly, much more often than autosave kicks in, so I'm not too worried about losing work. I'm not saying hardware damage isn't a common occurrence in places with crappy electricity but I've never actually witnessed hardwar...

Re: Build Advice, Please
why should I avoid them? If you have little use for them. Meaning if your electricity supply is reliable (if it's very good, a cheap UPS might even be worse than nothing) and if you're not doing anything very important on the PC. They're mostly for servers and people who have crappy electricity. Yo...

Re: Build Advice Again - Parental Computers
There are small fanless barebones you can buy such as the DS437T (new model, but there are older ones in case that one isn't available yet or too expensive). Less waste all around than building yourself though you might be able to save some money by building of you can source a cheap enough case/PSU...

Re: Build Advice, Please
ANY PC component is vulnerable when there is sudden power loss - that's why you should always run a desktop PC behind a Uninteruptable power supply. Problem solved. There is a specific data loss issue with drives. There are many SSDs which are (much) more at risk than hard drives. And some safe SSD...

Yeah, I think that cooler would very likely be overkill with a Pentium, especially if you also use a chassis fan. There's not much to cool in that build.
Also, there are some nasty prices in there. The 3420 seems the way to go as Quest wrote.

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
Well yeah, it seems to me that the case in which this feature of ZFS is most useful is: solid OS, unreliable storage. In other words, expensive servers attached to loads of cheap storage. But if all you've got is a couple of drives attached to a cheap Bay Trail board (meaning your OS is your RAID sy...

Linking to the scribblings of salesmen isn't an effective way to establish credibility. Sorry, but simple logic proves the CERN report (as reported in the linked article at least) is impossible in the real world. Modern storage does not have a byte error rate of 3 * 10^7. I would hope so! But unless it includes an early alert feature, ECC can't work miracles if the RAM is going bad (as opposed to handling the odd error caused by radiation or something). Does SMART report RAM errors? Does it flag a drive with eccessive RAM errors as failing? I don't know which means i...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
Cheap tapes (or optical) as well as cheap controllers account for a lot more than 0.1% of data corruption I think. Controller badness is especially common in USB gear in my experience. But I guess this is ironically where people are least likely to use ZFS... and where people are most likely to use ...

450 euros is a lot of money for a dual-core build, even considering the oppressive VAT you have to pay if you don't live near the Swiss border. ;-) I haven't built workstations with room for a 3.5'' drive in a long, long time so I can't help you with specific parts but here are a few things to consi...

IIRC, washu says Windows software RAID1 is fine but it often makes sense for Windows users to use Intel's fakeraid of they want RAID5. ZFS is not better than Linux software RAID. It's different (combining features of several standard software components) and it's got issues. Linux runs fine on the D...

I think you run Windows. Sysinternals (purchased by Microsoft) has free utilities which can tell you what is accessing your drive. If it's a non-Windows VM that's causing the problem, you'll have to use another tool obviously.

Except for the person who sells you the goods (or service). They have to pay for it all.Vicotnik wrote:They give me money later, I get the 1% bonus, win-win.
I'm glad I live in a country where many merchants routinely charge customers extra if they insist on using this sort of credit card.

They also have a somewhat unusual assortment of legacy ports. Sill no MSI in stock anywhere so I'll probably be buy...
