That does look about right. I find it interesting that Dell calls this "Pentium 4 Processor 3.20GHz, Intel EM64T, 1MB/800" and not Xeon. You would think they would want to use "Xeon" for marketing reasons.

Any chance Dell has been quietly selling 541s early? We got these last fall.

Question for you: what is a 3.2GHz P4, 1MB L2, and 64-bit extensions? Our Dell Precision 370s at the office have this processor, and yet your table does not list this configuration.

With the poor alignment of the CPU duct and my CPU, I found that leaving the CPU duct open actually increased case and hard drive temperatures since the exhaust fan was just venting that air directly. I have found the VGA vent to be useful to case temperatures. If I get ambitious with my tin snips, ...

What are A64 users using to compute CPU power (wattage) so you can compute ºC/W values? Or, is everyone just assuming linearity and just computing the offsets?

The two referenced power applications do not support A64.

I think it might mean adjust the front side bus, and I could do that in the BIOS , but that would mean rebooting. Still, I am NOT sure that that is what is meant. Is it? You might have too much AS5; more is not necessarily better. Also, you might want to read AS5's instructions which explicitly say not to spread it thinly yourself, but instead to put a grain of rice-sized dollup in the middle of the heatspreader and let the heatsink spread it with even pressure.

This poll isn't as useful as could be as you can't select more than one answer.

I'd buy a few D12SL-12 and a few D12SM-12 if they have RPM monitoring. PCTek's D12SM-12 does not have monitoring.

I wonder if your thermal paste is correctly applied. I don't have a Newcastle, but my idle/load CPU spread is about 24/40C with a 7000 at minimum fanmate speed, and that's overclocked a bit to 240x10. Of course, it is hard to know if my temps are accurate, but presumably the 16C load rise isn't too ...

was it difficult removing the stock HSF? The most difficult part was eVGA had glued the fan wire to the card. Ugh. I damaged the stock fan wire a bit removing it (some of the insulation was removed), so there is little chance I could reassemble it if I were to want warranty service. The rest of the...

According to this NMB page (pretty interesting!), airflow is proportional to RPM. Still, the blade shape of most of these fans are so similar, it is hard to imagine they vary all that much in terms of CFM/RPM.

Just buy some 3-pin female plugs and pins, strip the wire, and make the fan have a 3-pin (only two used) connector. Your wiring will be much cleaner. I think I bought a 5-pack of these plug/pin kits from www.siliconacoustics.com for $3. I modded a PCTek D12SM-12 this way. I also used these for my VF...

It is night and day going from the stock HSF on my eVGA 6800 GT (pretty much nVidia reference HSF) to the VF700. I drive my VF700 fan with a fanmate connected to a molex (i.e., I am not attaching the card's fan connector). I keep it at a low constant speed, and it still runs cooler than the stock HSF.

I don't think that overclocking has much effect on nF4 temperatures. You aren't typically overclocking the chipset, just the CPU and memory. Recall that the memory controller is on the CPU.

I don't think my nF4 temps are different running at stock 200x11 (x5 HTT) and overclocked 240x10 (x4 HTT).
