Resistor, many many thanks for posting those images showing the correct orientation for 2.5"->3.5" IDE adapters. I've been tearing my hair out trying to find such information represented visually, because my adapter didn't come with any installation instructions.

Return Merchandise Authorization

This is a number issued to you by the supplier or manufacturer of your product which authorises you to return faulty goods. The Scorpio has a 3-year manufacturer's warranty, I think?

I'm trying to decide between a Spinpoint or a Barracuda 7200.9. ..... Well right now, my WD800JB is the noisiest thing in my rig, so noise is of utmost importance to me Personally, I don't think you're going to experience a significant drop in noise with either of those drives without enclosing the...

It's a low volume and very high frequency constant noise that loops up and down on volume and stops for 1 sec then starts again. It get's on my nerves because it's constant and because it's a very high frequency noise. Wow! That sounds seriously annoying! I hope for your sake and mine that ...

Are you sure you're not referring to the clicking noise that the Scorpio makes which is caused by it's power management features, and which has been extensively discussed on this forum? There is usually a simple remedy: SPCR Thread 1 SPCR Thread 2 SPCR Thread 3 SPCR Thread 4 Thread 4 suggests that a...

the Scorpio issue which I brought up again last week. Out of interest, have you had any response from WD regarding that (the clicking noise)? Have they managed to work out whether it was a dud unit/wrong firmware/design flaw? Normally the Scorpios (or at least the 40GB version) respond to the Hitac...

Are 4200RPM Hard Drives Unacceptably Slow?

Hi, I'm looking for a new hard drive for my quiet PC and found myself looking at some 4200rpm 2.5" notebook hard drives for various reasons, namely cost, availability and low noise/heat. Can I ask people's opinions as to whether I will find these drives simply far too slow for everyday use? I genera...

Remember, fans = noise. You want to have as few fans as possible in your PC if you want low-noise, ideally none (but this requires re-building your PC from scratch). The only things left in my case that could be what has been causing the most noise is either the chipset fan or my PSU. The chipset fa...

I'd thought WD had resolved that clunk/clciking issue caused by power management/parking by firmware updates (either user end by using that Dell one or from the firm itself). Seemingly not as the drive I received exhibited the issue. I was under the impression that a downloadable utility from Hitac...

What is THE quietest 2.5" hard drive on the market now?

I must have read a bazillion threads this afternoon (an exaggeration, but you get the gist) on SPCR trying to find the definitive answer to this question, but still the clouds of uncertainty refuse to clear. Many people say the WD Scorpio 40GB is the quietest 2.5" HDD. Indeed, Western Digital themse...

I'm curious; how do you cool your CPU with negligible case airflow? Is that the Winchester AMD chip with very low thermal dissipation? Or maybe you're using a Ninja fanless CPU cooler? Anyone Have Any Opinions On NorthQ PSU's?

I was having a look round for a new PSU and came across these ones claiming very low noise levels (12-17 dBA): NorthQ @Komplett.co.uk On the one hand this seems plausible because of the large 140mm PSU fan, but on the other the claimed efficiencies on the website are poor considering it is meant to ...

Well in my opinion you should get the S12, for two reasons: A) It's cheaper. B) As you say, it "future-proofs" your system for whatever upgrades you decide to implement in your system, and the extender cables are a bonus as well. Plus you will have no problems fitting it into the P180, as it is a co...

P4-Mobile Thermal Performance

The truth is that the P4-M's power ratings are almost identical to the P4 anyway, which is why I didn't bother. They have to be more $ and there's not much advantage, your can underclock most P4s anyway. It seemed like a lot of work to put the thing in there with all the different speeds -- would h...
