Update: RivaTuner C16 is out, making this trick obsolete. Assasin: Idle temperature went up about 3C witha 25% fan speed, just enough to get rid of the annoying constant whine. I experimented with 3d settings of 35% o 48%. All are audible and are only tolerable if the sound from a game is louder. Th...

I have reinstalled my passive Zalman. I used blue Loktite where the screws attach to the central block, I am not totally convinced that it will prevent twisting. Looks like I have to treat it like a baby. The Loktite cost $6 at Lowes, but there are some other things I can use it for around here. The...

No it is not but then again not all Evga 7900GT have fan control just some of them.
That would be fine, except that your point was none of the 7900GT's had fan control and you turned out to be wrong.

Under Linux the fan would probably spin at 100% speed, unless the Nvidia drivers for Linux addressed this issue.

My 7600GT sceams like the dickens while looking over the bios screens.

First we had winmodems, now we have Winvga.

For the 7800GT a passive cooler is probably going to need a fan blowing on it, in which case it will no longer be passive. The Accelero X series is a good bet for that one. Some members have managed to get the 7900GT to run with a passive cooler, but I consider it to be a stretch. The Accelero X ser...

The mounting system is the same. It has the potential to get loose. That does not mean everyone will have the problem

Igor: For very hottest cards I had the 1900 series in mind. There are reports elsewhere that the VF900 did not work well on those. Overall, I think it is one of the better coolers available, but I like the Accelero X series more, if it happens to fit, and I wait with baited breath for the Accelero S...

What VGA card are you going to put this passive cooler on?

No one can give you a legitimate answer to your question until they know what your application is.

What I am startiing to think is there is litle or no benefit unless the contact between the heat sink and the GPU has been broken. In that case replacing the thermal compound is really more of a repair than an upgrade.

The Ninja, as good as it is and I have one, is only good in the right application. For example, it will not work in many HTPC cases. So it is with VGA coolers, even more so. The Accelero X series cools very well, but willnot fit all cards. The VF900 is excellent, but may not be the best one for the ...

Another method entirely is to use Everest, assuming it can read the temperature off your particular VGA card. I works with the 7600GT even though it does not officially support it yet. It can log to an html file while running any full screen or windowed demo. Many of the hardware sites loop the firs...

Thermal Compound & Performance With Stock Cooler

Has anyone around here removed a stock VGA cooler and applied a high quality heat sink compound like Arctic Silver?

What effect did this have on reported temperatures at idle and under load?

I am just as interested in people that got great results as those who saw little or no change.

Artermarket Cooler for 7600GT

Has anyone around here tried any aftermarket coolers with the 7600GT? I used a ZM80D-HP for a while, but gave up on it due to issues with the mounting system. I would be most interested in hearing if anyone has used the NV Silencer 6 Rev 2 with their 7600GT. Even a link to a forum thread would help....

The ZM80D-HP will cool, but the mounting system is weak and could result in ruining your card. The heatsink can rotate around an axis that passes through the GPU core. Also, the mount can get loose. The V-1 ultra could have similar issues. The mount is similar but made of heavier metal and uses larg...

A stock 7600GT is definitely audible above a low noise PC, enough for the PC to not be low noise anymore. The stock setting is 31% in 2d and 65% in 3D. That 65% is nasty as it is a high pitched noise that could be heard over the sound track of a lot of games. I am using RivaTuner (see another thread...

Things to try: 150 ohm resistor inseries with the fan. This will take the sting out of it. You will be able to hear it with the case open, but likely other components in your system will drown it out. If you do not game, cooling should be good enough. Zalman passive Northbridge cooler. There is a Core VID option under power users. I don't know if the 7600T can be reprogramed this way, and I would not try it until there is official support, or perhaps never. All that I have seen about 7600GT voltage mods has involved replacing a resistor, or hacking it with a pencil to reduce the v...
