Are you running too many optical drives to fit another in a 5.25?
These work pretty well: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/std ... etwin.html
They're not as good as suspension, but you'll still get 4 drives softmounted in 3 bays for not a lot of $.

I've been buying almost all WD drives. They've been reliable enough that now I've got a stack of perfectly working drives I'm not sure what to do with. I'll definitely keep buying WD. Most people have better luck with 'em. I seem to only get junk drives (with the occasional exception). Fool me once...

Reading NewEgg reviews, there are no 1TB disks to buy safely - too much problems with all of these. WD disks are better, Seagate ones worst. According to my personal experience, Seagate is noisy but generally reliable, WD drives die alot, and Samsung have proved pretty decent so far. newegg reviews...

2.5" drive in p180 Q
I'm upgrading the last loud component of my PC in the next month, and I'd like a little input. Most often when really, really low noise levels are sought one of two storage options comes up: SSD or 2.5". I mostly like what I see when SSD performance is considered, but the price is  . 2.5" dri...

slowing down the drive to 8x or lower (dvd) should eliminate most if not all of the noise. what do you plan to use the drive with that would create such a terrible noise? When the rest of the system (save HDDs-- which will be addressed shortly with a pair of 2.5" drives) is essentially silent, the ...

Most of the noise comes from the vibrations being transmitted from the sides and bottom of the drive casing to the drive cage mounts (and the rest of the case as an extension). Some dampening material (soft foam or silicone/rubber grommets) in between those joints should do a lot to reduce the amou...

Effectiveness of soft-mounting optical drives?
I'm in the final stages of considering/ designing a custom case build. One of the last things I'd like to clear up before I go forward is this: is it possible to soft-mount an optical drive without degrading performance? Does anyone have experience with this? If worse comes to worse I can always sof...

I switched to H2o three years ago. A few observations: 1. Quiet air cooling is entirely possible, and has been in every one of my client builds since I discovered spcr. 2. In general, air-flow in air cooled systems needs to be far more carefully managed. 3. In general, components of a water cooling ...

Re: Yate Loon D12SL-12 Noise Recording
Does SPCR have a noise recording for the Yate Loon 1350rpm version of the 120mm D12SL-12? I tried searching but all I could find was the Nexus 1000rpm version of this fan, of course with the same model number. Anyone know how it compares to the Scythe S-Flex 1600rpm SFF21F? Similar noise profile, b...

F-R-F-R-F F-R-F-R-F F-R-F-R-F F-R-F-R-F This is not a good idea. As configured you're wasting the heat dissipation qualities of the second rad by blowing hot air from the first into it. More restriction + inefficient cooling configuration = higher temps. With a 4x 120 rad you'll have a lot of cooli...

Is the 750W considerably louder? It has a 120mm fan and only 1 heatpipe. The 850 costs a lot more for being only 100W more, but its also a lot more attractive and the innards look to be of higher quality. Argh, I just cant call myself sane spending $180 on a darned power supply. 850 is manufactured...

Gateway deal Head's up- for 4-25-08 ONLY
Not spam, but since I'm in the market I thought I'd check Gateway's site one more time before I jumped. Glad I did. Th eGateway M-151X series is $300 off 4-25-08 only. That should make it only $600 for a C2D machine with discrete graphics and a 250 Gb HDD. product page link . The deal announcement i...

I'm running prime 95, F@H (SPCR team FTW), and ATi Tool concurrently right now. In three hours the fan has yet to ramp up. I'd boycott, but I've only bought an Ultra laptop power cable, which stopped working. No warranty since I didn't register with them within 30 days of purchase (cable died in 3 months). I think that instead of a boycott, SCPR should review one of their PSUs. That's ideal, since SCPR doesn't have a s...

well, actually you would ever hardly break 300w but that's besides the point, i guess. as for the sound on mine, it's noticeable but not unpleasant. the ea380 i use with the same system is less loud, however. not sure what else point of reference to pick here... you could always replace the fan if ...

I'll be running Finale 2008, Ableton Live, Kontakt2, Ivory Italian Grand, B4 and Garritan Personal Symphony. not too quiet but it seems the system you are putting together is not going to be anywhere close to "silent" when under load, what with 8800gtx and all those drives. it's probably reasonable to assume that the psu's fan noise won't be all that noticeable in the lower chamber of p180. i am not going...

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610?
I know, I know. They're louder than a Modu82+, but I'd prefer something with a straight through arrangement for my p180, and these are always solid units, if not extremely quiet. Plus, $100 seems very reasonable. ;) Are there any options for fan replacement, perhaps, that might make for a good alter...
