how does Anandtech test heatsinks, from their test setup I can't make out if they are using a case. If they are indeed not using a case, that would explain why the Ultra-120 was able to outperform the Tuniq in their last test. testing outside a case does not give an accurate sample of real world per...

the reviewer who did the tests informed me during his tests that neither of acrylic panels had a cutout, while the paper cutout might make you believe otherwise; there was no hole in acrylic. :-/

We did get an early sample of one of the first batches.

again with the dBA levels ; ugh. I'm convinced that in your "PC" room with the PC turned off the ambient noise level will be between 30-40dBA. Borrow an SPL meter and do the test if you don't believe me. with room ambient in my test room back then ~32dBA, that 35dBA is 3dBA over ambient at ~50cm fro...

if you can return the product, you could give it a go, but to be honest, the difference between all these high end coolers is not worth the hassle, if you are already have a high end one, your pc wont run faster because you upgrade the cpu cooler. and just setting lower fan speed to below audible le...

hi all:) the test setup I'm using has a passive PSU, "ok" silent HDD, and at the old location I got about ~34dBA at night; never seen it go lower than that. In my new house, I'm at 37-38dBA even in the middle of the night, in a basement, where it is dead quiet, ah well, no luck for me, when I'm buil...

@MikeC: I suggest that SPCR should also test the fans (maybe just the best ones) when mounted on a HS or on a case . I agree, it seems the Noctua fans do deliver in open air, but when paired with a heatsink which has tighter fins, its performance will drop, as the fan can't deliver a lot of air pre...

Browsing through your list of reviews, it looks like most of them are on an AMD platform, some are Intel, some are open case, some are closed case. all reviews I did since last year december were done in the same closed case with an AMD A64 system; in some cases the mosfet/PWM temp would be close t...

it seems that with sufficient case cooling (in this case 2x80mm front/back) the performance difference between the chipset coolers is minimal.

Greetings, A quick comment on the Mad Shrimps review: he mentions that the use of the passive HS didn't seem to increase the temps on anything else. How could it? . we're not talking large numbers here, rather the effect of placing a hot heatsink in an area used for CPU cooling, it will have an eff...

subzero cooling on the GDDR3 had a nice result

Did it work? Yes, the memory got chilly! Did it help with overclocking the memory, sadly, not at all
sweet.

the X1950 series will be HOTTER and consume more power than the X1900 series; so that's an extra challenge right there!

Basically, to me, it boils down to this. In the battle of passively cooled heatsinks, the ninja wins all. However, for only 2dba more, why go passively cooled when you can have better performance at very close to the same sound level? Ah, a 3 dB difference is twice as loud. dB is logrithmic scale. ...
