I'm not sure that the wind screen idea is quite what we're after. Wind screens for microphones are intended to block airflow while remaining acoustically transparent. Some attenuation is inevitable I suppose, but the design goal is the opposite of what you're looking for: Blocking noise while keepin...

I wouldn't use any of SPCR's 20 dBA@1m results in your calculations. They're too close to the noise floor to be wholly accurate. I should also refer you to the text of the review for the Enermax UC12EB — the 28 dBA@1m number is skewed on the high side because of a pure tone resonance that is not p...

The GW "model number" is unusual in that it's reported inconsistently or not at all, all over the web, and that it fits the "Globe Fan" numbering scheme, not the "Global Win" numbering scheme. Given the lack of any "official" model number, I suspect that many companies have simply misidentified what...

"Resettable" is not a feature that I am aware of, but my guess is that it will reset itself automatically when one of its protection features triggers, which is probably what you're experiencing. However, it sounds like that same protection is just triggering over again the next time you power it up...

There's no question that SPCR's lab is not anechoic; it's a live environment, and behaves as such. We've known for ages that our measurements can't really be compared to anything else out there. But, since we were the first to explore computer noise, we got to set the standard :P . That said, I don'...

I second that: I think it will probably work, but there's no way to know for sure without trying. Trying to determine ahead of time whether you're safe is guesswork at best.

I repeat: It will probably work, but you need to try it to make sure.

Can you measure the peak with your current setup so you can get an idea of what the power surge is likely to be? Also, will you be power cycling often? If it's just a matter of getting it to boot once, I would take the risk. If you're likely to restart often, or if you are likely to have frequent sp...

Speaking from experience, I'd avoid the Ext 2 Installable File System if you use Unicode at all. Reading the fine print, you'll find that the driver doesn't support file names with Unicode characters (i.e. any Asian character sets). When you try to copy files with Unicode names to the Ext 2 partitio...

I would say that with 7 hard drives, you don't have to worry about too little 5V draw. Each drive should draw at least 2~3W from 5V, and, so long as you're using medium or low speed fans (which it sounds like you are), your fans are drawing only 1~2W each. Add in the other components in your system ...

Is it possible that the 4-pin TV out connector just an S-Video connector? If so, look that up. For the record, we did do some experiements using a wire fan grill to introduce impedance into the airflow path.
