Re: Bay Trail Gigabyte BRIX

I suppose heat is the main concern with this. Is this CPU also being used in fanless laptops?

Really? So a properly designed heatsink won't feel warm to the touch at all?

Re: Raydget CoolBox IV

I know right? Maybe they were concerned at how it would look comparted with the SlimBox. I guess sometimes function takes a backseat to form.

But the fact that it is warm (or hot) to the touch simply means the heatsink is functioning as it is intended, right?

Well, I bought a 2.5" WD Blue 500 GB WD5000LPVX also myself, thinking the spindown can be disabled, but I have exactly the same experience as toronado455. Thanks for posting. Nice to know that someone else has replicated/verfied my findings! But sorry that you had to go through all that. I didn't e...

Re: Acer Aspire E11 & V11

I have a bad feeling it's HDD only, given they cheap end of the market they are shooting for. I'm sure you're probably right about that. From the photo of the bottom of the notebook, it appears one could possibly open it and swap the HDD for an SSD, though depending on the internal design, that can...

Re: I need a prebuilt system around 10watts

I will use it as a server. If you keep it on 24h/24 after some time it hangs due to memory errors. So, if I can choose, I will choose ECC. Would it be possible to have a cron job that reboots periodically to clear out the RAM? Might be a cheap solution? ECC is only supported with server boards, rig...

Re: stock Hyper212 fan - unquiet at any speed?

The fan seems very quiet and blending nicely with the rest of the (minimal) system noise. This is on a Gigabyte GA-B75M-HD3 with 4-pin headers for the CPU fan and 1 system fan. BIOS is reporting the CoolerMaster fan speed between 695-745 RPM, which seems pretty low. However the CPU fan (Scythe PWM) ...

Re: re-using an older case with a new CPU cooler?

Thanks. I installed it today. The standoffs in that case turned out to be exactly the same ones that I used for the photos, so no problems there. The I/O shield and PCI slot alignment is perfect. And there didn't seem to be any contact with the MB tray as I was installing it, and there is plenty of ...

Re: stock Hyper212 fan - unquiet at any speed?

Thanks. I am going to give it a try. I've got it installed via earplugs instead of case fan screws so it is nicely isolated and direct transmission of vibration should not be an issue. And I have it connected to a motherboard 4-pin header so I'll be able to control it via BIOS and hopefully run it a...

stock Hyper212 fan - unquiet at any speed?

I've replaced the stock fan that came with my CoolerMaster Hyper212 EVO, but I still have the stock fan which I'm not using for anything, and was wondering if I might be able to use it as a case exhaust fan. I need only minimal exhaust airflow because I'm setting up the case for positive pressure, s...

Re: re-using an older case with a new CPU cooler?

The backplate looks like correctly installed: btw, you have to use the standard standoffs supplied with the case, otherwise the I/O shield couldn't align with the case back cut-out for I/O connectors. I'm not even sure which length the orignal standoffs are cause the case is so old. I realize about...

Re: re-using an older case with a new CPU cooler?

I had every intention of using one of my older PC cases for my last build. But after mounting the cooler (Hyper 212 EVO) I looked at it and thought that there might be clearance issues with the cooler backplate and the MB tray not having the cutout. I thought it looked as if the backplate would come...

re-using an older case with a new CPU cooler?

Are there any modern CPU coolers that would fit in an older PC case (circa 2007) that doesn't have a cutout in the MB tray?

Before you install the MB in the case, remember to pop the I/O plate into the case first. I have forgotton to do that several times and had to disassemble stuff. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks. Is it any quieter than a Seasonic S-12 (original S-12, not S-12 II)?
Is the 80-Plus Bronze certified version any quieter than the previous (non-certified) version?

Re: List of fanless laptops

HP’s Spectre 13 x2 fanless detachable Haswell notebook. This could be interesting. Very interesting. Full HD display with wide viewing angles, no fans, & SSD all seem good to me. An overall favorable assessment from Brad Linder. Core i5 / i7 with no active cooling is bound to generate some heat. Bu...
