The IP35 Pro has dual gigabit NICs hanging off the PCI (not PCI-E) bus. That's inexcusable in 2007 if you ask me, but I guess it's not important for some.

The Asus PK5 Deluxe has one PCI-E and one PCI controller, whereas the Gigabyte has one PCI-E.

I'd really see a thorough round-up/head-to-head featuring passive video card coolers like the Thermalright HR03 (Plus), the Zalman VNF100 and the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1/S2, preferably on a bunch of different modern video cards.

This article, from "Hardware Secrets" December 15, 2006 may help. The problem is not likely to be with SATA. Certain newer mobos reported as having problems with IDE. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/408/1 QUOTE It is very important to notice that the single ATA/133 port available on this mot...

I would guess the culprit being the motherboard. The recently released/upcoming 945/865/etc equipped C2D motherboards shouldn't be as power hungry.

I bought the 380W Seasonic S12 (the PCIe revision) after all. It was cheaper than all of the other PSUs I was looking at (except a few Fortrons), so that was a factor as well, and I'm pretty good at routing cables so the modular thing, in the end, wasn't something I was prepared to pay extra for. Ma...

New PSU Purchase Recommendation

Hi, I currently have a P4C 2.4@3 GHz (Zalman 7000AlCu, lowest speed), 2 HDDs and a recently bought AGP 6800GS in a Chieftec Dragon case. 2 80 mm Papst fans at 5V too; one intake and one exhaust. The exhaust doesn't really do anything (ridiculously low speed), but it's completely inaudible anyway so ...

My Gainward AGP 6800GS (256 MB Bliss 450/1200 version) definitely has an HSI chip. It's not one of those NV42-based 6800GSes, it's a bridged-down PCIe NV41 (A3). I think only a couple manufacturers released these. As for the original question I'm not sure, and I'd like to know, because I'm in a bit ...

Is the Athlon XP really that much hotter than a P4 in idle mode? Looking at the temps you reported in this article makes me wonder. I have a reserator connected to a 3,2 ghz P4 Northwood and a Radeon 9800 Pro. When totally idle, the temps are around 28-30 degrees C. It has been on a WinXP SP2 bitto...

I know the PR system is whacky now, that's why I'm saying a 2.4C ~= 2800+ - 3000+ . So you can't really compare the prices between a 2500+ and a 2.4C without taking into account the performance discrepancies. That was the entire point of my post. AMD hasn't released any info regarding the Athlon64 P...

Presently, going with AMD would be more expensive at the same performance level, at least if you can't re-use some of your components and have to buy most things new. You would need something like a 2800+ to start compete with the 2.4C w/HT (and I'm not even going to mention that most (~80-85 %?) 2....

FYI, a P4 2.4C (with HT enabled, on i865PE/i875) is about as fast, in general, as somewhere between 2800+ and a 3000+ (on an nForce2), which makes them actually cheaper. AMD's performance ratings are totally out of whack towards the top of the ladder nowadays.

For the record, the 300 and 350W 120mm fan equipped Fortron's are available in Sweden, www.gtek.se has them.

Sure, they cost about 2-3 times as much as in the US though, but that's nothing new.

The i875 north- and southbridge run a lot cooler than say, the nForce2 MCP/MCP-T so with a bit of luck, you might be fine without that fan, plus not having to invest in another, fatter, heatsink.

Glad you sorted it out. For future reference, as to speaker hum, it could be a couple of things: · Crappy soundcards, especially Sound Blasters are inherently noisy, also onboard sound chips. Try muting every output you're not using in your mixer/volume control of choice (CD, AUX, Mic, whatever). · ...

In my ongoing quest (proven to be quite difficult) to find a decent high-performing Socket A heatsink for 80mm fans at a non-exorbitant price, I stumbled over the Thermalright CB-7 . Thanks for the tip. However, Gainward have made their own combined fan and heatsink thing (think 10mm tall Orb-type thingamajig), so I definitely think I'll need an altogether new heatsink.

As to what heatsinks are available here, leave that problem to me, I just want some recommendations :D

Currently, I have a ghastly CoolerMaster something-or-other with a highly annoying 60 x 15mm fan that sounds like a vacuum cleaner (it sounds progressively worse when slowed down), plus it doesn't cool my Athlon XP 1600+ that well.
