I would tend to agree that SPCR is too forgiving when it comes to HTPC noise. I *do* notice my HTPC drive (WD Green power) from time to time, even though it probably measures less than 23 dBA@1m. In a room that was too quiet to measure (i.e. <15 dBA), even quiet noises are still audible, and can irr...

<sigh> Instead of criticizing his forum etiquette, you *could* just answer the question. As I see it, debates of necro posting and its merits is just as off topic. No more please. @navratilova: You need to choose a resolution that suits your screen. If you have a wide screen LCD, you need to choose ...

Hi Mike, You need to plug the connector into the display on the front panel ... and you'll probably need to remove the optical drive bay to get at it. Once you find the display, it should be fairly obvious where to plug it in. Just make sure you re-wire things back the way they were originally! Devo...

Flickering displays are generally an issue with poor quality cables, though I suppose a low-power display port could also affect things. In any case, I'd be hesitant to blame Asus for that one. Try a shorter and/or better quality (usually, thicker) cable.

If you arranged enough of them, you'd be able to suspend the room on a cushion of magnetic repulsion with no contact with the ground. Kind of like maglev trains. Like maglev trains, it's probably cost-prohibitive for general use. Yep. But then we'd have to start worrying about the effects of large ...

The audio interface was a Terratec 6Fire 24/96.

I *think* the foam was Acoustipack ... but I don't know for sure — we just picked a piece that was lying around in the lab.

I'd love to snag a T-Amp sample (and keep it), but I'm not getting my hopes up. Trimark, the company that made the chip inside went belly up about a year ago. I apologize for not doing any research, but aren't there laws against products that cause RF interference? Yes. Clearly, Scythe could get the...

souagua, You've done an excellent job of picking our setup apart. I appreciate the thoughts. I think you summed up my response in your first paragraph: What you suggest is "overkill for the task at hand". I think I can agree with you on most points, but I'm not sure why you suggest a stereo recordin...

Finally Windows knows a virus when it sees one

http://www.silentpcreview.com/files/misc/windowsvirus.jpg For those not in the know, Windows Explorer refers to the whole Windows GUI, not just the file explorer that you're used to. This "protection" effectively shut down Windows (though thankfully, not the other programs that were running), causi...

Since this 3.5" drive has such low power, it would be very nice to have a USB HD that includes it. Maybe we could finally get rid of those ugly power bricks, simply giving it power with a double USB cables... Unlikely to happen. USB provides a maximum of 0.5A @ 5V. Two cables gives you 1A = 5W. We ...

Looks like Asus is taking some flak from the Linux community for not following the GPL license or providing source code. Given that the GPL requirements are pretty minimal compared to say, a Windows license, this seems pretty shabby. Hopefully Asus will get the message and make the source code avail...

Ah, the aluminum / aluminium debate. I don't know why this particular word pisses people off so much. As far as I know, aluminum is not a proper noun, except possibly in specific c...
