Well health insurance is something everybody must have since everybody lives and has a body (unlike car insurance for example), that's why it's obligatory by law in many countries. What's the purpose of an insurance? You need medical insurance because you don't know if a big disease is going to hit ...

I hate it when I walk out of the door of my school on a rainy day and get a lungfull of smoke for reasons mentioned above already (makes me cough and smells bad). But there's worse: I cycle in heavy traffic every day, and a 2-stroke scooter/motorbike is worse, or a badly adjusted diesel, or a bus, o...

But don't blame colonization, when you have argued that decolonization has caused the problems! (And "we"? What colonies has switzerland had? Or do you include us Brits in your "we"? How... friendly I suppose!) Sorry, there is no way you could know this but while I am located in Switzerland (and ne...

One quote that made me grind my teeth together was this: Manufacturers are moving in droves towards ROHS compliant "green" components, as power consumption continues to put performance computing at odds with environmental consciousness. Of course we know that ROHS has nothing to do with power consum...

Hell, I'm not even a fan of mass democracy. I'd prefer the best educated and most moral to vote So you are saying that some people's opinions are worth more than others. That's a dangerous path to walk... How do you judge who's more moral? Do you think the educated people will vote for the good of ...

the flexibility of using different discrete GPUs can also be beneficial. Yup. This has already been done in the notebook segment. What I'm saying is that if a big company wants to make a pc with low-powerconsumption graphics, they would probably just use the "MXM" module, which is much smaller anyw...

I think the reason the CPU manufacturers started pushing the "performance-per-watt" stuff because the need for more powerful processors was dying (at least for the majority of users) and had to find a new way to differenciate. The GPU market is probably also going to top out soon with even mid-range...

Well, basically most of us in the forums knew most of this already. It is a useful arcticle for "outsiders" and newcomers. The conclusion makes me think you should send a link to this arcticle to the ISO  The mention of the fact that a louder but more pleasant noise can still be acceptable brin...

For the northbridge problems, maybe leaving the I/O shield out, or making a hole there will help, three possibilities of what will happen: 1. Air will be sucked in through the hole and past the NB heatsink 2. Air will be sucked in through the hole and back out the extract fan, then you will need to ...

I wouldn't be sure of either side, but there's definately something fishy going on, so I'll lean towards the "yes" side... Err, back on topic, I know those aren't very hot components, but, does the PSU ramp up alot on load? Maybe some case fans are in order (and cutting out those grilles)... I think with those temps, you can still afford to lower the fan speeds quite a bit. We'll see when you add the filter. For the paint job, did you use grain filler? In my project I'm still doing coats of grain filler (although I'm not working very fast, I'll admit), I'm trying to get it as smooth as ...

Looking over your post, and the pictures of the motherboards concerned, I have another, more plausible theory: The gigabyte board is the GA-M57SLI-S4. If it was the 590, the power consumption difference between it and the Asus board in your post is too much. The reason it is less good than the Abit ...

So the conclusion then is Gigabyte sucks? The load power levels seem to indicate that the gigabyte board is more efficient though. The question now is: is the gigabyte just more efficient at full load and crap at low load, or has the gigabyte board got a good VRM, but loads of "extra" chips that use...

You posted the AMD graph instead of the Intel one. [edit: either I messed up, or you made a correction :) ] That's a pretty crazy mod of those guys, but it makes cross-platform comparisons possible. Wait a sec! I just looked at the Abit website , and it appears that the KN9 is based on the nForce 4 Ultra, not the 570 SLI. Or maybe you meant the KN9 SLI... Funny, I thought the 5xx series could only have been an improvement over the past generation in terms of power consumption (I thought they w...

We should get some SPCR insider in a big computer store with time on his hands to do a test like this with a wider range of mobos. There seems to be no simple way of guessing which mobo is more efficient, you can guess that if it's a 590 it's going to use alot, if it's a VIA it'll use less, and if i...

Where's the paper case? ;) I'm extremely disappointed--I was hoping for an actual paper case. I've made cases out of cardboard, and I've used (cardstock) paper extensively in some builds, but I've never actually made the entire case out of paper. Hmm... I was also disappointed  . I wonder if i...
