While this method solves the noise problem, it actually makes your total power consumption worse, since you now need two machines. A better solution for a computer that has plenty of ram is just to find a way of spinning your harddrive down for everything but loading/saving documents. Laptop-mode do...

I can't remember where, but I think I read that these were meant for the laptop market, where the reduced feature set makes more sense. Naturally that doesn't stop the mobo maker to use them on the desktop.

Interesting comparison, but when you say increase the noise level, do you mean that the noise will increase because the fans have to be run at a higher voltage to achieve the same airflow, or turbulence noise?

I don't really care if it runs cool idle. Perhaps from a cooling standpoint that is true, but from a power usage standpoint idle consumption is the most important. I hadn't seen any core2 vs. X2 power comparisons yet, and this is quite surprising. The core2 has a better performance/watt, but in rea...

Welcome to SPCR! Looks like a pretty good setup to me. I would go for the E6400, if you go higher than that, I would also get a more powerful graphics card to balance out the power (for a gaming pc). For the motherboard, I'm not a fan of the placement of the ATX power plug on the MSI board. For a d...

Nice work, have you thought of putting some filtration on those bottom intakes? It's likely to act as a vacuum cleaner and fill your case with dust  I have a similar harddrive and I was scared of completely enclosing it since I had no way to see if it was overheating or not. I hadn't thought of that problem, but there is about 8mm between the rubber lip and the paper filter material, then there's the 18mm of the case and add a couple of mm for the silicone decoupling I'll add on after I'm done painting. Should work out I guess. McBanjo, I'm sorry I won't have any temps ...

It's a pretty huge case, I was considering 18mm side panels because I wanted to make a solid case with no vibrations, but I put in 10mm because it was just getting too wide. The only way I could make this case less wide is by using smaller fans. So here are the approximate dimensions: 581mm (H) x 48...

Don't forget that your wattage testing was done on wattage consumed by the PSU, not the amount put out. Considering a 75% efficiency your system was probably using around 185W at maximum load. One more nail in the coffin of the "you need 500W" myth. Well if you like modular PSU's why not the NeoHE, ...

I think copyright should be more of a guideline, people should be mature enough to buy a CD from an artist that they like, or pay for a software that they think is worth it, but not be penalised if they don't. What this means is that people will pirate media they think is overpriced for what you get...

I don't know much about peltiers other than the fact that they use lots of power (30-50W I believe), that power has to come from the PSU which gets hotter, and the power goes somewhere, probably into the watercooling loop. No definite system, but I have some thoughts: You definately want a dual core processor: AMD64 or Core2. 1GB should be enough, since you are trying to keep a small budget it's worth trying to keep what you have. Good on them, but recycling computers and consumer electronics has been free (for individuals at least) for a few years in most european countries. And IIRC Apple already offers such a service, so Dell is not the first one "stepping up".
