there is low voltage (1.35v) ddr3, but im not sure if it comes in sodimms yet. on top of that, im not sure your laptop takes ddr3... or would even be willing to run it at that voltage. if you have two sticks of ram, removing one might do the trick.

power consumption is more effected by voltage, which its tough to beat SB at. though i wont lie, i have heard tell of people with celerons that sip single digit watts at idle. so for the cost savings too, it might be worth it to try that route.

another soft mounted 1600 RPM S-Flex user here. in the bottom of my mini p180, i practically have to put my ear to the exhaust hole to hear it. i kept the rpm lead out of the psu, generally get around ~420rpm under normal use; only increasing to ~500 rpm under heavy load(still under 200w at the wall).

if you had a top mounted psu, you would mount it so the fan was on the bottom.

looking at the orochi in the case i'd say a back panel fan would be pretty restricted in its airflow. not optimal at all. if anything i might say grab one of those new thermalright or noctua 140mm fans and slap it on the orochi.

this isn't really a speedfan issue. you cant query SMART data for just a specific piece of info, you ask for smart data and the drive gives you it all. the issue arises in that some smart data is actually stored on the platters themselves, so every time there's a smart query, they've got to spin.

if youre not using the bottom hdd caddy, i would say that adding an intake fan would help.. the pci slot covers on the mini p180 are kinda open, so airflow out the back should be decent.
